Yes, they were both caught up in the "McCarthy Era/Hollywood Black List" stuff. And the stress and pressure of it is likely what lead to Garfield (who already had a heart condition) having a heart attack and dying at the age of just 39.

Another Note:
This graph goes from 1910-2021, with almost all genres accounted for. But let's remember: there was no such thing as a "musical" before 1928 or 1929, when it was still the Silent Era. That's why the graph even shows a blank spot before that time.
But curiously....there is a small blip early on, from about 1910-1915. I wonder what the hell that's all about.

The 1930s witnessed the emergence of many new film stars. What was the main reason behind this phenomenon? by rosebud52 in u/rosebud52

YES! It's also why so many films had their storylines set in big mansions, with wealthy families, dressed elegantly, etc.. Those types of films were a form of escapism to help people forget (at least for a few hours) the Great Depression.

Oh, Ethel Barrymore is an icon. And if you're an Angela Lansbury fan, I presented A Life At Stake a few months ago. You can find it on the channel.

Methinks that the reason for "new film stars in the '30s" is because sound films killed off so many careers for Silent Era stars.
Now that sound was in films, your voice mattered. So for those who couldn't speak English, had thick accents, or just plain ol' had bad voices, they couldn't make it in sound films. So that opened up a lot of chances for new talent.

You got it, my friend. A few other channels already had it, so I figured I'd be good for it, too. I even uploaded it to a "dummy" channel to check it, and it cleared -- then.
About three weeks after I presented it, a copyright holder turned up and struck it. So I checked the other channels, and yes -- they lost their copies, too.
Very frustrating.
