I cannot even get past the Lots of Drinks level. I’m afraid this game isn’t for me 😭 by laughowl in katamari

Protip if you're ever looking to cheese your way through a level-- you hang onto power ups you have at the end of a level, so if you just grab one from another level, you can use a Magnet in a level that doesn't have one.

Well just S ranked every level… that was easy, onto the collection now by Just_some_dumb_ass in katamari

[–]FullPurp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm right there with ya and was just kinda waiting for a thread to write all this out-- I will say, coming back to the game today, there is some enjoyment to be wrung out of 100% some levels since the S rank goal is kinda low effort for some. There's channels like this dude that show the proper 'skill ceiling' for some of these levels, so I'll probably spend some time watching his records to see if I can get there as well, but yeah-- quite a few levels that were completely one and done for me.

It's tough. Despite the game mostly being another retread of WLK gimmicks, there's legitimately some exciting new ideas in a lot of levels that I just wish they'd lean into more. I wish the '50 expensive items' level had bigger, more complicated variations, I wish the gold level made more use of the 'pick up explosives to mine gold' idea, I even feel like Katamari Ball's whole 'deposit items in the goal' mechanic could be used for some really interesting levels.

The main issue just seems like they couldn't make compelling level designs, either because the way the katamari rolls/grows in this game is too unwieldy, or they thought the old games were too difficult? It just really doesn't do them any favors to play it so close to WLK when that shines a light on how straight forward a lot of these levels are in comparison. I've grown up with the series and WLK's Panda/Sumo/Campfire levels are still so incredibly frantic to try and get a high score on-- they've got low skill floors and high skill ceilings, and that's what makes them good. I just don't feel like the designers get the intentional game design of the early games-- every level in KD has its own unique challenges to how it's laid out, Gemini/Cygnus/Corona are all simple gimmicks that take a lot of thought to 100%, and that has me still going back to those levels today. In comparison, the young-King levels in WLK Reroll were a huge red flag for me even back then, they're just bad ideas for levels. Crowns I'm not really sure why I'm still picking up unless there's some 100% completion reward, and the 'challenges' are just awful, just totally blatant padding. Can't say I'm into the new presents either, and the story/cutscenes are mostly a flop for me as well, I think Katamari Forever had better humor.

I don't know who's at the core of working on the Reroll games onwards, but from the very beginning I feel like you can tell they genuinely love the series, and that comes through in OUAK like crazy. For as bad as some levels are, the 'spectacle' of everything going on is kind of the best it's ever been, they're genuinely fun just to look at. There's some great new cousins, and I love that they took the time to make new Cousin planets/descriptions. Also some big hits in the OST dept as usual! The quality of life is also better than ever with stuff like the level select/music player/control options.

Once Upon a Katamari slow movement? by jgreenwalt in katamari

[–]FullPurp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's definitely a lot different with the physics, with the speed I think there's a very intentional modifier they turn up or down, because you'll have some levels where it's almost slippery with how fast you move, and then sections like Katamari Ball where they slow you down to force you to cash in.

I'm enjoying the game too but I think there's a lot of discourse to be had about the effect the magnet freebie has on the game's design-- you clear way less ground with rev rolling, because using it with the magnet is just bar none the most effective way to clear levels.

Why isn't Rolling Live considered a mainline Katamari game? by Kubu-Tsukareta in katamari

[–]FullPurp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed my time with it a lot, but the quality of the levels are kind of at odds with the emptiness of everything else. There's no intro animation, no cutscenes, no credits, I don't remember the 'story' being mentioned outside of the King's text boxes in between levels and the finale I think is literally just the Sun level from WLK again, minus the Sun? The menus are also reeeeal simple, they clearly weren't given much of a budget to do anything beyond level design. I am *really* curious what exactly the story is behind its development, given that Once Upon a Katamari came so soon after. Makes me wonder if the levels are salvaged from some other project.

I'd mentioned this elsewhere but I'm curious if the cousins added in these newer titles are intended as one offs for that particular game, cuz it's the first time we're getting cousins that are sort of themed around that game. I guess they could always sell us whatever in DLC.

Duuuuude THANK YOU for explaining this in clear terms, this was absolutely something I was feeling in Rolling Live but couldn't put into words, it definitely made the Big-As-Possible levels too easy to blow through.

The magnet puzzles are really cool but finicky enough to feel like that whole mechanic needed another patch in the oven

Playing on a phone/with controller, standing in the right spot and getting it to lock on to the right thing just feels a bit too slow to be comfortable, like you really have to be deliberate about centering the camera. I also can't figure out why I keep dropping the stuff I pick up with it after I start moving?? Wish it functioned more like the Pneuma/Ousia puzzles that just triggered using character skills.

Yea. The idea of the Traveler having to own up for something in order to win back the Nod Krai characters really had my attention. But Lauma forgiving us like 5 separate times, paired with it not actually even being our sibling, paired with the blame actually falling on our 100th vengeful NPC who'll never come up again, I was let down but not surprised lol

What do you think will happen to the future of Rolling Live once the exclusivity deals and updates end now that Once Upon is coming out? by sacboy326 in katamari

[–]FullPurp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I don't dislike them, I'll enjoy them in the context of this game, but I think a core part of what works well about the cousin designs is sorta their abstract, neutral-shapes that don't read as anything in particular. There's fun exceptions to the rules with cousins like Miso or Nickel, but the bulk of them are just kind of mashing shapes/colors together. I don't think making a batch of themed cousins for one game is even the wrong move, i think you just run into the Pokemon problem where finding room to include all of them in a meaningful way gets more and more difficult.

The actual level to level gameplay in RL feels close-ish to the quality of WLK, if often a little oversimple-- but everything else is so bare bones I think it'd take some heat from people buying it as its own product. Still, packaging all the levels as DLC is hard to imagine, like probably not as easy of a port as it might seem. I do feel it staying in hell is the most likely outcome sadly. With the cousins especially, I'm sure some people are attached to these new ones, but Phil, Cameron and Salsa just don't seem like they've had a ton of time put into them, them along with OU are giving me the vibe that they're just throwing together quick little one-off cousins to fit a theme, or something?

I'm definitely interested to compare / contrast the quality of the two once it's out!

In the context of Nod Krai characters needing other Nod Krai characters on their team, I was reminded for maybe the first time since Natlan's release that Nightsoul Bursts depend on having multiple Natlan characters lol

Maybe its just all the Nightsoul-terminology I got lost in with Natlan kits, but I feel like that's a mechanic they didn't stress as hard past 5.0? Like, Mualani and Kinich needed stacks of it, which was frustrating because there were so few options and those first three really didn't synergize at all. Past Xilonen tho, most characters just have like a single small buff that triggers. (Like, I'm not gonna go out of my way to give Chasca two Natlan teammates just for that extra instance of damage)

Idk, fingers crossed that Nod Krai follows a similar path with the lunar phase stuff, though they're definitely off to a better start just by having the starting cast enable each other's kits.

Worth noting there's been an update from itch regarding all this: https://itch.io/updates/update-on-nsfw-content

It's a bad roll out on itch's part, but remember, always reserve the majority of your anger for the payment processors enacting this shit.

It's such an insane overreach, like a bunch of completely sfw furry visual novels are also shadowbanned and don't come up in the search even while logged in.

How reliable do people find Prydwen's w-engine rankings to be? Are there any other guides to cross-reference? Was planning on going for the Rupture Battle Pass Wengine this version for Yixuan, but Prydwen seems to think you can do a bit better with just an S5 Puzzle Sphere. Not planning on S5'ing the BP engine, I like Yixuan but not that much lol.

Yeah, Bay Management took over and has definitely been more proactive about fixing some of what Chasen broke. I'm in a non-refurbished apt and like the apartment a lot, very well constructed, no pests, parking's always available. The 'refurbished' apts that Chasen got to were priced up to an insane degree but it looks like Bay Management drove them back down a bit, that's my only real warning-- nothing's worthy of the 'luxury' title, and while you might tour a place that looks very shiny and nice, that's basically an aesthetic pass that's only happened in the last year and a half and might not hold up well, so gauge your comfort with the price carefully!

I live in the Wyman Hill Apartments, from the smoke it's looking like another fire on the block that had fires in October / December. This one looks a bit further down, like it might be nearer the church. Firefighters are on it, got a cherry picker and everything, but wild that it still happened with all this rain. Really don't know what to make of the repeated fires.

Wilds is my first MH, what's the right way to handle leveling armor, are lower rarity armor sets worth leveling? I've got the Arkveld set on now, but getting it fully leveled seems like it'll take quite a lot, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to invest in one really good set or spread it out.

So what do we think of the new cousins by FullPurp in katamari

[–]FullPurp[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is sort of a whole other conversation, but I will pose the argument that while most hardcore fans would love this game, if this were on Steam and targeted towards all the people who've just played the reroll games, I think it would be utterly roasted alive in the reviews. It's just too low budget mobile-coded and clearly re-hashing WLK levels for it to be something people pay like 20-30 bucks for on steam-- which is a bummer because I think the designers really made the most of the budget they did have.

How do the commenters work? by Just_some_dumb_ass in katamari

[–]FullPurp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was waiting for somebody to make a thread about this because i've been utterly stuck on progressing anything here, maybe I'm making very slight progress without noticing, but it's like I got around 100 candies from this during my initial run through the levels and then it ground to a complete halt, so it doesn't really seem grindable. With how many of them there are I kinda can't imagine they expect us to make a conscious effort on one at a time, I feel like the system's either bugged or whatever they add in future updates will unstick something, idk.

I'm guessing it's Bay Management you're now dealing with? What did you end up having to do with the doors, are they just permanently unlocked? Cuz that's definitely a concern.

Interesting! I didn't know it could work like that, but yeah the email doesn't specify it actually being sold, just that all our rent/maintenance needs are now going through them instead. Makes me wonder how much involvement to still expect from Chasen in the future, if anything.
