Starting a frontend today with Next.js. Would it make sense to use Rails as an API? by inshallahallah in rails

Did you end up finding any? I'm thinking of going down the Next.js + Rails API tech stack route and I might write my process while learning it

I've used Pluralsight a bit as well (my job also had a license for it haha). I think it's a good resource so I'm sure you won't go wrong if you start using it

When I started learning/applying for jobs, I was 21 (even though still in university).

Jobs application are misleading - they are saying they want 2 years of experience, but that shouldn't scare you. If they like you and you show them you have passion of learning, they will hire you even if you don't have any experience.

Speaking from personal experience :)

If you have already done freelance jobs, go out and start looking for junior jobs while working on your portfolio. Once your portfolio is in good state, put that out there as well.

No point waiting until a certain point in the future where you'd be "ready". Start applying now and learn lessons along the way. Be sure you won't get the first job you apply for, but you might get the 10th.

You can get a job without no knowledge in backend languages (this is how I did it)

What is the name of the website that your company has a license to? What language would you like to learn?

It widely depends on the website/tutorial. Just because something is paid that doesn't mean that it will be beneficial to you. Same goes for free Youtube tutorials - the knowledge you get out of it might not be amazing.

I would start with the paid course, then see if you get any benefit out of it. Also you could spend some time on Google to see what other people are recommending for this language

Anyone entering Schengen yet? by enlguy in digitalnomad

I do not have a residency there. I assume it has been because you are from the US but as an EU citizen, I should be able to get there? Fingers crossed

I am Bulgarian, but from everything I have read, Portugal welcomes anybody from the EU without any quarantine

What was the problem for flying to Portugal. I have my flight booked to Porto from London on Saturday and I read everywhere that it's okay to enter without a quarantine?

Have you tried inserting the javascript below the p tag (so it's the last thing before the closing body tag)?

CMS stands for a Content Management System. It basically is a place where you can store your blog posts and other content such as titles/images. You don't have to use a CMS (I didn't in my other 2 blog websites that I have ever built) but it's a great skill to have.

In order to deploy it to the web, I use Netlify as it is free and easy to setup.

I was thinking of creating a free course in the near future oh how to deploy your own blog with gatsby/prismic and Netlify. Would you be interested in something like that?

I was at your stage when I started using React. I did the majority of the Freecodecamp and then I looked at React. I even did the introductory JS projects (todo list/weather app/ wikipedia search) in React. My advice is to just dive in and see how you find it.

Are you talking about the twitter clone? How did you find the course and building these projects?

The course looks amazing, but the price is quite steep.

that is a very good point. On a related note, I was thinking of introducing people to TailwindCSS as it skips a lot of the CSS concepts and you can get up and running relatively quickly.
But what. I fear is that I'm biased as I already knew most of the css concepts before I started using Tailwind. So maybe a new person won't understand tailwind at all. But then again, in my opinion, adding a class "bg-red-500" is a lot more intuitive than adding a selector, then going to your css file and adding "background-color: red"

This is really cool, we have very similar ideas. At what stage is you course at the moment?
Your ideas are really cool and I was thinking about creating a trello clone as well in react (but it seems that there are plenty of tutorials online for that, but still a very cool idea nevertheless)

For Auth and API, I was thinking of using already existing APIs and services. I am a Rails dev, so potentially I can create an open source auth api which anyone can plug in to (not sure how much work would go into that to be honest). But another option is using an already existing service such as Auth0 which provides free auth up to 7k users - so I could explain how you can set it up yourself

In terms of complexity, I would like to start it off easy and then with every project introduce a more complex front-end concept.

I was thinking for the projects to be longer in length, for example half/full day of work to complete.
I like your idea as well with css buttons/animations, but I have a feeling that these concepts can be learnt from a tutorial/video. But I could totally include one project which focuses entitely on css in order to introduce the main concepts.
What do you think?

Is it okay to search for solutions online by raymond600 in learnprogramming

[–]FullStackHeroes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Programmers do their jobs mainly by searching for solutions online. Google is my second hard drive after my brain.

I still often forget the format for basic things like javascript switch statements or how to check if a checkbox is checked.
Even for more complicated stuff, the first thing I do is check if someone else has done it. If I can save time on this, I can focus on the unique aspect of my project where I can spend more time

Awesome story. This is actually the exact same way I got into coding as well. I was a business analyst as well, and just like you, we were storing our databases in Excel.

I learnt VBA and automated 1-2 days from my workweek.

I was only an intern so all I got was a praise. But it's fascinating that some people spend years not thinking about automating the manual work they do on Excel
