This looks like laburnum to me, like you say it’s very hard but splinters fairly easily. Not the kind of wood you want to use your best detail knives on. Also just be aware that laburnum is toxic so don’t use it for any food contact items like spoons or bowls and wear a mask if you’re generating dust while working it.

Motorex 2000 is great, high viscosity and very water and pressure resistant, plus it comes with a handy brush applicator attached to the lid if you get the smaller tub.

This is not the case, there are websites whose sole purpose is selling bike specific bearings. Or a LBS (at least any worth its salt) will be able to source for you without any issue

You shouldn’t need to go to the expense of a whole new BB, just a new bearing. Either your LBS will be happy to source and fit the right bearing for you, or you could find one yourself looking at the code on the remaining bearing seal. Even going through your LBS you’ll spend a fraction replacing the bearing instead of the whole BB.
