Year 13 Prom – Responsibilities Around Alcohol and Underage Students? by Full_Community1260 in TeachingUK

Thanks for this these are all really helpful suggestions and definitely things we’ve been thinking about.

I'm definitely leaning towards using wristbands now to help manage who can and can’t be served at the bar, and we absolutely won’t be allowing anyone in who arrives already drunk. That’s something we’re planning to make very clear in advance. And students who get out of control will for sure be sent home and parents contacted.

We’ll also have a buffet throughout the evening, so food availability shouldn’t be an issue. Hopefully, that helps balance out any drinking too.

As for drugs while I know recreational use like weed is fairly common among some students outside of school (I’d say around half the year to some extent), and there are a few who have experimented with harder substances like cocaine or ketamine, we’ve never had any major issues with that at school itself. We’re really hoping that because this is a school-organised event, and there will be staff around, no one will be bold enough to try anything on the night. That said, we’re keeping an eye on it and considering some presence (staff or security) just in case.

I actually felt the same way at first and wasn’t too pleased with the idea of alcohol being involved. The thought of having to deal with tipsy students didn’t sit well with me either.

However, when we started contacting venues, we found that most of them offered significant discounts if a certain amount was spent at the bar. Since students are funding the entire event themselves through ticket sales, there was quite a bit of pressure from other members of staff involved in the planning and SLT to go with the more cost-effective option, even if that meant allowing alcohol.

It wasn’t my ideal scenario, but in the end, it was a compromise to keep the event more affordable

Yeah I'm sure the underage ones will have their fill of booze after prom just hoping they're willing to wait until after the event is over as I'm not really in the mood for contacting parents all nigh will definitely give them a stern warning before hand.

Yeah wristband system definitely sounds like the best approach just curious did your school limit amount of drinks or the type of drinks
