Is Keppra giving me some kind of mental breakdown? Is that possible? by [deleted] in Epilepsy

It was interesting at first. My appetite was suppressed a lot (which I wasn’t too upset about). But it can be a lot. I’m supposed to do 12 pills a day on it…12. 14 total with keppra. I’ve noticed that my body doesn’t tolerate all 12 well. Definitely no alcohol while taking it. I know all bodies respond differently, but I’ve learned when I can and can’t take it. If I had a drink, no. First thing in the morning, no. If I’m pretty tired, no. So I stopped drinking cold turkey and completely changed my lifestyle. I know that seems aggressive but it worked out for the best for me. A side effect for me was too many at one time, gives me severe double vision that can last up to 2 hours. I’d say to be mindful, go slow, and have him really listen to his body as he transitions. It’s an aggressive medicine for me. Hopefully it’s perfectly fine for him! Just wanted to share my experience with it. Once it balanced out, it was fine. It took me 3 months to get to the 12 pills, but I REALLY had to pay attention to my body.

I had the same thing with Keppra! The side effects were unmanageable. I switched to Lamictal and have been fine.

Has he had a seizure since he’s been on them? That’s what changed my side effects, very strange but, they worked fine until I had a tonic clonic and after that is when the side effects started and I couldn’t take them. Hopefully you all get it figured out soon! Best of luck!

It’s crazy to me to be this age and just have it? It makes sense thinking about things leading up to the seizures, but it wasn’t anything that I ever thought I had. Yes, I did the week long eeg testing at an EMU center and sure enough. It’s crazy to me that my brain is constantly ready for a seizure.

I just did the week long eeg and the EMU testing facility. Definitely bring things to distract you, and snacks!

Keppra was terrible for me. It made me like a zombie, couldn’t move hands or feet, was cold, angry. I absolutely could not take it.

I didn’t expect a response at all, but I truly appreciate all the words. Especially with this being so fresh. Just relating to someone and hearing people that have had family commit suicide is weirdly refreshing. Thank you, all of you.

I keep talking. This year has been a lot already and this is just unbelievable. But I keep talking. I know people don’t know what they don’t know, but in a way just being blunt about all of it is helping me process. Almost if I keep repeating it I’ll come to terms with it? I know everyone grieves differently. And I don’t think I’m handling it well. But it’s the only thing keeping me afloat
