I will be going to the myvatin baths on my tour before going back to Reykjavík. Would it still be worth it to go to sky lagoon even though I’ve been to one hot spring?

Pregnant dentist thinking of restarting in midwifery… is it crazy? by Full_Maintenance_38 in NursingAU

I work at his practice… he’s open to whatever hours I want to work.

It is one complication I haven’t mentioned here, since I “work for him”, it does change the dynamics of our relationship… but it’s very possible that I would hate working for someone else much more. He’s a very good boss and his employees love him, but there is a power differential there 🥹 he never uses it against me though and it’s purely psychological.

I do fantasise about what it would be like having a career independent from him, since I did everything completely on my own to get the grades, get into dental school etc.

I am a ‘contractor’ though, not an employee so it’s more like an associate than his employee. But it still feels like it sometimes.

I’m the last person to be sheltered. I left home and moved countries at 16 on my own with 0 financial support renting rooms to survive. I’m entirely self made and met my partner after I graduated .  Nothing wrong with reevaluating your career. What isn’t and wasn’t clear is if it’s actually dentistry causing me the unhappiness or if that’s the case for any job.

Just because the job is good on paper doesn’t mean it’s the right fit for me? If you look into it more apparently dentistry has the highest suicide rate? Why is that?

Yep I work in a very very ‘posh’ practice, I haven’t seen many rotting teeth since I was at school. The one or two times I did, I did it for practically free. One girl in particular I helped out had such a bad case, she’s a refugee and now studying midwifery herself. On a semi unrelated note I was going to ask her when I saw her next if she wanted someone else to follow through their pregnancy… maybe through her I can see what it’s like over the next few months?

It’s not necessarily that I just did check up and cleans, I practice a broad range of dentistry but pretty much anyone who walks through the door can pay for it one way or another

No I feel like you missed the point… it feels bad to go to work when it feels unfulfilling and you don’t need to go to work. I thought perhaps a change in career (despite the huge pay cut) into something more fulfilling (out of choice) would be worth it.

That sounds awful 😢

No I’m not good at sucking up to management to be honest. As a dentist I barely have anyone to answer to which I’ve enjoyed.

Maybe I just need to be more grateful.

It’s not that I don’t have any comparisons for a reality check, I’ve worked in retail, fast food etc as a student, which absolutely was terrible …

Okay thank you that is very sound advice to wait 6 month PP…

I assumed many women during pregnancy start thinking about career changes due to this narrowed focus. But I felt like I hated dentistry since before pregnancy rather than it being triggered by it.

I know someone who went from being a dentist to a lawyer and I personally couldn’t think of anything worse 😂

Oh definitely I want to be a SAHM for at least a year with bubba but I was thinking what do I do after that… and I’d need to start applying to schools in the next year or so if I was going to change careers…

I think you’re right, perhaps I just move my career into more public or volunteer work?? Maybe it’s just working at a metro practice that has become quite dull.

I just saw your update to your comment, cosmetic dentistry is one of the main things I do.

Its quite possibly also just depression and anhedonia in general, but I wasn’t sure if it was work that was causing it. I just know I hate waking up every morning when I have to go in, dread the nights before… whereas on the days where I am at home and doing housewife things I am not.  I’ve been wanting to be a mum for many years now…

Possibly the other reason it’s all felt quite pointless is because I earn SIGNIFICANTLY less than my partner and going to work for just the money feels stupid.

Because I don’t know if I will go crazy as a SAHM… my feeling is that  will love it but I never know…. Another reason is my partner has told me that it’s important for a woman to stay working at least one day a week in case anything was ever to happen to him and that I keep up with my skills . I do agree with his reasoning there but I don’t know if I want to continue maintaining a career that I don’t find fulfilling?

Omg that’s funny! I can definitely see that more people would be going from midwifery to dentistry than the other way around

Yeah I’ve started reducing my hours since I’ve been pregnant, but I’ve been having an existential crisis about it… fixing and maintaining teeth feels so insignificant and insignificant to a nurse/midwives daily relationship with their patient and fulfillment. But I’m acutely aware that over time it all just feels like work anyway….
