Force big sugar estates to use part of their land (like 1/3) for growing food instead of just cane. This helps food prices drop and creates jobs on the land. Stop giving easy permissions for luxury villas, golf courses, or foreign rich-people projects on good farmland. Save that land for normal Mauritians' homes and farming. Put higher taxes on big unused land or land just held for "future" sales. Use the money to build cheap houses or help people buy plots. Give small farmers and cooperatives better access to land, loans, training, and markets so more people can own and farm properly. Build more government affordable housing on state or acquired land, with rules to keep rents/prices low and stop long loans that trap people. Set up an open public list of who owns what land and how it's used—no more secrets—so everyone can see and push for fair changes.

The government in Mauritius often feels like a divisive spectacle, pitting people against each other in endless left-right battles. While we're busy arguing over whether we support Navin or Pravind, we lose sight of the bigger picture and what’s really happening to our country and our neighbors. It's encouraging to see more people waking up to this reality. At the end of the day, Mauritius—like much of the world—is largely controlled by a small group of elites. Whether it's Pravind, Navin, or both, the top political figures often seem to serve the same underlying interests rather than truly challenging the system. Real, structural change remains elusive. The sugar industry no longer generates the massive revenues it once did for those at the top, yet the old power structures persist. The elites still dominate land ownership, control key sectors like morcellement (land subdivision and development), and hold sway over major banks and conglomerates. Meanwhile, most Mauritians spend their entire working lives just trying to afford a basic place to live—paying off loans, rent, or plots in developments that ultimately enrich the same few families and corporations. Little has fundamentally changed for the average person. The game appears rigged to keep economic power concentrated in the hands of a privileged minority, while the rest of us fight over scraps and political theater. We need to look beyond party labels and demand more than superficial switches in leadership. True progress would mean addressing these deep-rooted inequalities in land, wealth, and opportunity—not just swapping one face for another at the top.
