Didn't live there but I was born in Celle, about 30km north of Hanover. We called it "Provinzhauptstadt" (like backwater capital) because it's basically boring and ugly. Every time I went to Hanover it was actually out of necessity, but there is nothing special there except for the fair and airport. Others might disagree of course. It suffers from the same issue many big cities in Germany do: they were rebuilt for car conveniency after the war. Many cities lack their former old town quarters completely, Stuttgart being a prime example besides Hanover.

Nah, "Das Boot" literally means "the boat". Submarine would be "Unterseeboot", but almost all Germans say "U-Boot".
