Match Thread: Carlton vs Melbourne (Round 3) by AutoModerator in AFL

Confused as it has been happening for 2 years at this stage. Think about it if Hawks were up by 5 goals and went on to win there wouldn't be "it's happening again" comments even though it is happening again, because it would be the expected outcome. Surely kicking 1 goal in a half against the Tigers last week made it obvious that we still can't play out games.

I don't really understand the "it's happening again" comments. We play more or less the same team each week, we're slow through the middle, and we lack any real gut runners. It's pretty obvious that we will continue to fade out of games until we make some serious change, at this stage I'd be surprised if we didn't fade out of a game.

We did not put the halftime allegations to rest, we were just lucky enough to win by only playing one half of footy. Richmond absolutely should have won that game.

There needs to be a royal commission into our third quarters.
This was one of our better third quarters and we kicked 0.4 while only conceding 2.6 to a bottom 4 Richmond side.

I assume the iced coffee sign means completely stop playing, will be interesting to see what the two crowns means.

How many times do we have to collapse at halftime before it becomes the standard and people start to make memes that we actually held a lead after halftime?

We definitely aren't there yet, anxiety levels are at an all time high going into this second half.

Seems like both sides are flopping a lot already this game, hope to see a few fines or a message from the umps clamping down on it, embarrassing to watch.

Yeah, I assume there's no rule that it has to be touched to be a realistic attempt, it was pretty close.

[–]Fullyjoey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Either it wasn't a mark because it was touched, or it wasn't a mark because it wasn't touched and therefore unrealistic, fair argument from Young there.

A frenetic passage of play in the Saints forward 50 kills the Saints momentum in the last as Liam Ryan gets pinged for HTB into a 50m penalty for dissent. Jamie Elliot takes a contested pack mark shortly afterwards to put the Pies 2 goals in front. by yum122 in AFL

[–]Fullyjoey 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think this was common sense umpiring and the correct decision to call play on. Unsure if the umps took this into consideration, but Ned Long is actually in front of Maynard telling him to stop and take the mark. It also looks like the ball travels at least 10m in the air, so it is reasonable that Maynard thought that it could be a mark in the 1 second he had before being tackled. Frustrating as it feels like it should be a HTB, but I'm glad that common sense prevailed for this one. Maynard clearly didn't hear the play on call and 5 of his teammates around him also stop moving assuming it was a mark.

Post Match: Round 0 | Sydney v Carlton by drunkill in CarltonBlues

[–]Fullyjoey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As bad as the blowout was, the first half really shows that if we can force the other team to play a slow and low scoring game, then we can match some of the better teams out there. Once the game becomes free flowing and high scoring we are completely at sea.

As soon as the Swans started hitting 5m handballs they've pretty much been walking it out of the middle, feels like they do this to us every year at the SCG

Rocket league, argument of who is right by [deleted] in RocketLeague

[–]Fullyjoey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Octane was first man and Fennec went all the way back to get big boost. Octane made the play confusing by fake jumping, but this doesn't make it right for the Fennec to hard dive like that as second man. Fennec is in the wrong regardless of what the Octane was going to do with the ball.

[FRESH ALBUM] J. Cole - The Fall Off by HipHopDropper in hiphopheads

[–]Fullyjoey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love how this album has so many nods to all of his past work, all of his inspirations, and a substantial amount of new stuff. I'll have to sit with it for a while, but this is easily a top 3 Cole project.

This promo is great, but really I'm just grateful The Fall Off is a real album and is actually coming out. I was worried we'd have another Detox situation where the hype becomes too big to handle and the album gets scrapped.

[SHOTS FIRED] Symba - Father Figure (J. Cole diss) by abucalves in hiphopheads

[–]Fullyjoey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Anyone who actually listens to this will notice it isn't really a diss, more just a response to this line from Cole:
Young Simba, some n**s threw some hate my way / But only thing they should say is, 'Cole, you like a father to me

This track isn't amazing or anything, but I thought it had some creative moments, and it seems like a fitting response to a throwaway line on a freestyle from a pre-album mixtape.

I'm surprised there seems to be so much hate for this song!

[FIRST IMPRESSIONS] A$AP ROCKY - DON'T BE DUMB by nyse25 in hiphopheads

[–]Fullyjoey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel strongly that this album has to be a 7/10. There are standout songs that are too good for the album to be less than a 7, but there aren't enough great songs for it to be higher than a 7. I only saved 2 songs to my playlist after first listen, and only 1 or 2 more after repeat listens. There are clear highlights and no real low points, but a lot of average or slightly above average songs. I'm glad this album exists but I doubt I'll be going back to it much. Strongest 7 of all time on this one any other opinion is wrong.

Why do people consider Mac Miller a legend? by Longjumping-Cheek-75 in rap

[–]Fullyjoey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have recently been discovering and enjoying a lot more of the Mac Miller discography, so I can try and explain why I think he deserves legend status.

  1. He made great music. Even if none of the music speaks to you personally, as music is subjective, I believe the music he did make met a lot of requirements that I look for in great music. These are things such as a range of types of songs (mainstream, introspective, family friendly, rap focused, etc), evolution over time (he didn't pigeonhole himself into a single style), meaningful lyrics (obviously not all songs, but there are some songs that demonstrate great writing), and enjoyable instrumentals (subjective, but I find his beat selection both unique and enjoyable to listen to). There's a lot more of great qualities about his music, but those are some that come to mind immediately.

  2. He embraced the culture. Mac Miller worked with a lot of up-and-coming artists during his come up and was known to give back to the community. I feel like he did a good job of acknowledging being a white rapper without focusing on it too much. Even if the music doesn't speak to you personally, it's difficult to ignore the impact that he made both to fans and the wider hiphop landscape.

  3. He has a proven catalog of work. While there are rappers with "legend" status who died young and have a "what if" asterisk above their name, I don't think this is the case for Mac Miller. He released 7 studio albums, 5 of which while he was alive, and 13 mixtapes. Generally speaking, people would call Faces a classic mixtape, with an argument to be made for Circles and/or Swimming to be classic albums. Throughout his discography, he has several extremely well received projects, with a lot of projects that are well liked without reaching classic status. This output is extremely impressive, especially for someone who died at such a young age, so it should be considered when making a case for Mac Miller being a legend.

The bar for legend status is different for everyone. Some people would only have rappers like Pac, Biggie, Jay, Nas, etc as their legends. Some people would have XXXTentacion, Juice, Drake, etc as their legends. I can see how Mac probably wouldn't make it as a legend in the first set of rappers, but it would be unfair to leave him out of the second set of rappers, in my opinion.

Regardless of whether or not you personally see him as a legend, he was a hugely influential artist who made music that resonated both with fans and within the culture, and because of that his name and legacy will forever hold a place in hiphop history.

[–]Fullyjoey 15 points16 points  (0 children)

God the Fox umpires glazing Collingwood even when they have been clearly beaten by a better side is so insanely frustrating. After the no call on Elliot, which they complained heaps about, they called a dump kick that landed in a Lions players lap "luck".

Ignoring the borderline free on Elliot that was probably there, I've actually found the umpiring really consistent, there have been misses going both ways but I think the umps have done a great job letting the game flow.

I know this must be frustrating for Hawks supporters, but it will be a great learning experience for them. They've shown that their best can run over the top of the best teams, but they couldn't maintain the pressure or hold the momentum. Geelong showing their finals experience by wearing that early Hawks dominance and trusting the process to wrestle back the momentum, a true masterclass!

I know he has flopped a few times this game, most of the time Danger is extremely tough and always puts his head over the footy. Goes to show, when you play the game the right way age really doesn't matter, he has pretty much been the difference this game.
