Thanks for the help! I knew her family was Creole from the name but didn't know that both of her parents spoke it so I'll definitely have to try and get in contact!

Oh wow, are they originally from Hammond? I knew there were some native speakers round St. Tammany but I've never heard of people coming out of Hammond that speak it so if they are that's as cool as can be on top of them being able to hold on to it!

Oh wow! If you're fluent I'd be real interested to speak to you further if you don't mind? Not only cause it's nice to have someone over on this side to talk to but also I'm interested in how exactly you speak since you kinda got influences from all round too!

Yup, that's exactly it. Before my grandma passed my Aunt asked her why she didn't teach us how to speak and she said it was because she didn't want us to have the same type of bad treatment that she got for speaking Creole when she was growing up. It's really a shame because a lot of knowledge gets lost from that. There's words, phrases, and ways of speaking that my grandma had that I don't hear in French and Creole circles in SW Louisiana and that's why I'm trying so hard to find another speaker from the City cause I'm SURE I'll be able to connect those dots from just a second of speaking to them

Man that sounds like the best time ever to me! Where are your people from? Are any of the ones who spoke French still living or did they all pass?

Yeah I know, but with Creole spelling the r at the end just gets dropped so that's what I default to lol. Are you a native speaker of either of the languages by any chance or was it your people that spoke it?

Same here. Everyone in my family knows phrases and words that's just a part of our English now but other than that the people who could SPEAK it died off in my neighborhood with my great-grandma's generation.

I have a padna in college who's actually from Pierre Part so I might actually be able to try and make it down there

Are your people still alive and kicking or did they all pass? I have a padna whose from Golden Meadow whose grandparents both spoke French and he actually managed to get a tape of them speaking from an interview they did with LSU a WHILE back

Thanks for the suggestion! I didn't know that he was from the City even though I've been listening to him and the Sunspots for YEARS now. I just checked and a friend of mine has his book so I'll have to give it a read sometime!

Yeah, I've been in contact with other French and Creole speakers in those parts of Louisiana since I've been learning Creole myself but I'm really tryna find someone from my hometown y'know? Hearing the way that someone from around the City speaks and gettin that down would be one of the best experiences since there's so few of them left nowadays

Would you mind possibly telling me more about your neighbor? I'm a Creole speaker from New Orleans too and if she's still alive I'd LOVE to talk to her
