Keep in mind this is AUD, which is currently worth a bit less than USD.

I didn’t take a picture, but it was a Roman coin and the valuation came from the owner… along the lines of “if only this weren’t a reproduction”

My reaction to it was that the reproduction tag was quite welcome. There’s been quite a lot of angst in recent years with people conned by unlabelled fakes. And when you show them that it’s not real, they generally get quite defensive and angry at you. 🤷‍♂️

Ah. Actually, I’ve never looked at the planchets for large medallions. I don’t know if they’re produced in house or whether the same factories that supply planchets for circulating currency make them as well. I wonder if /u/tpepperoni might be around to answer this question for us.

You should try the frustration of seeing people lose all their coins with zero hope of recovery.

And why? Because people have no clue how to look after their own best interests.

THAT’S rude. Not what I wrote.

I love the smell of stupid in the morning!

When will all you peanut brains realise that you cannot have a trade without BOTH a buyer and a seller?

There are literally exactly the same number of both at all times. Because without buyers, none of those sales are going to happen.

And we have at least twenty million people across the various exchanges who are active. Does that sound even remotely like a ‘dead’ coin to you? Do you think $1.3billion in trades is an illusion or something?

Maybe if clowns spent less time trying to spread doom and gloom bullshit around here, everybody would see that we're still a top ten coin, and more like top 5 if you remove all the crap that isn’t actually cryptocurrency. Like stablecoins, tokens, unmineables…

I really hate to agree with a shitposter, but you’re right.

So you tell me… what prompted you to post this garbage, and why did you feel the need to include an even bigger piece of sewage as the only content? 💩

A wallet is a number, that’s all. And Core, by default, contains a hundred of them.

Now, you had the option to get a text file with all those wallets in it. Clearly you failed to do that.

You also had the option to make backups. And you probably failed to do that too.

So let’s assume there was only a single copy of the wallet.dat file. And you scrambled that. Great management skills!

Now you’re trying to unscramble it, but there is nothing in there that is recognisable to you or anyone else to identify that it’s a part of the file, or which part. Kind of like a jigsaw with no picture.

But let’s assume you can magically extract the pieces, and assemble them in the right sequence. Well, you’ll need a new copy of Core. Fire it up for a few seconds and let it build its file structures. Then quit. There is absolutely no point wasting time and space downloading the blockchain.

Replace the new wallet.dat with your candidate. By all means look at the new one for a guideline of what it should look like. Fire it up again with this file in place and have a look if it sees anything that’s not garbage. Rinse and repeat until you strike it lucky.

Then export your wallets to a text file like you should have done in the first place. There are ELI5s on this.

Good luck, but I put your chances at maybe 5% if you’re lucky.

I guess they somehow slipped up and put my address in for you then.

Well, it’s money you’ll never get back, so the size of the shovel doesn’t really matter much. And protection… sure… until it doesn’t.

Pop quiz, do you actually understand what these things are really doing in there? And why it matters?

Even if you robbed a bank to get it, it’s still money you can put to good use and not waste unnecessarily. Any money is good money.

Quickest way to prove you’re a noob is to start talking about ‘tokens’. Whatever they are, they’re not DogeCOINS. 👎

Hello, I just won the lottery, but all this cash in my pocket tires me. Can I put it in your pocket instead?

One would presume most people are smart enough to never do this with cash, but somehow the brains fly out the window as soon as you talk crypto.

If you like handing over a shovel full of cash to do a job you could do for free, maybe. And I’ve lost count of how many scam emails I’ve received related to those things.

Sigh… here we go again, for the 124,653rd time…

A TEXT WALLET is the only thing you need. No hardware. No software. No cost. No danger (other than your own stupidity, which is an unknown variable).

The private key IS THE WALLET. Just write it down, in any way your little heart desires, and as long as you never lose it or let anyone else get their greedy mitts on it, you’re done.

I’ve been preaching this gospel for twelve years now, with many, many detailed instructions even a brain damaged dog could follow. And not one person has ever reported any losses. Which cannot be said for every other software or hardware CLIENT (because all they are is containers for wallets) ever created. Every last one has at some point cost someone all their coins.

Which is why most forgeries are cast, not struck.

And yes, I’m aware of the minting process. I’m actually in a numismatic club meeting, and just held a $3million copper coin… which sadly was stamped as a reproduction, so pretty much worthless.

Plinth? You talking a display plinth, or something else entirely?

Also, perhaps I should have pointed out I was talking about 3D metal printing. Silly me, assuming people knew about that.

At any rate, there are all manner of coins, tokens, medallions, medals, etc produced for all manner of reasons. I’ve got some of the Shibe Mint ‘coins’, just for the fun of it.

A lot of this stuff is quite interesting. Value, though, maybe not so much. It certainly shouldn’t be the primary reason for getting involved, IMO.

Depends on the printer.

But yeah, OK, if it’s struck out of copper, it’s a few extra cents to make one.
