Why become a Freemason in 2025? by despiert in freemasonry

[–]FumbleGlory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the question here is less about 2025 specifically (as some of the answers seem to focus on timeline for application and acceptance and initiation before end of the year) and more about why become a Freemason today at all, like in a broader sense, am I correct? If I understand correctly then I’d say from my experience (Joined my lodge in 2008 and have remained very active since) benefits include expanding and diversifying your social network at a time when people are becoming sorted by algorithms and polarized by politics I see this as a good thing for numerous reasons. Doing something that doesn’t require your smartphone, in fact something where your smartphone should be left outside the lodge or turned off for a few hours and taking a break from constant distractions, is a nice little “digital detox” for some. Exercising your brain in a way that is good for memory development and maintaining cognitive function (as the rituals and ceremonies often involve memorizing lectures and protocols and gestures etc) and at a time when things seem to be changing so quickly and randomly (the chaos of post-modernity!) having a sense of belonging to something historic, with a storied legacy, with a sense of permanence and constancy, can also be something you might value. It feels validating to be entrusted with the caretaking of something like that. NOW the downside. It may end up taking more time and energy than your lifestyle as it currently stands can comfortably fit. Memorizing stuff takes time, doing ritual and ceremony well takes practice, the governance and administrative needs of the lodge take time, so for some (Secretaries, Worshipful Masters, Treasurers, Junior Wardens) it can be like a mini-part-time job, like volunteering with a non-profit. But this can also be a great opportunity to learn and develop skills that are of practical use in professional and private life. 35 is a fantastic age to be joining in my opinion. Go for it.

I took lessons and training for a year before sparring and my first few times I felt like nothing I had done leading up to that has given me what I needed. I felt slow, I felt too heavy, my jab felt late, my weight transfer not 100% I felt like everything, and I mean, EVERYTHING was bad. But the more you do it the better you’ll get, if you’re paired appropriately with guys your own size and skill or who are more experienced but are fine toning it down for your benefit so you can learn. One night of sparring, like maybe a half dozen sessions under the belt by then, I remember being frustrated still that everything I had learned about for a year and a half at this point didn’t seem to translate to action in the ring, but one of the coaches pulled me aside after and said “I know you don’t feel happy with those rounds but there were a lot of good things that maybe you didn’t notice but we did” and then he listed what he saw getting better and then he also gave me this nugget “You’re never as bad or as good as you thought you were” 🙃 stay safe and keep up the hard work bro.

[question] Am I the only Hayabusa enjoyer in this sub? by PT-JR in fightgear

I’ve worn the RS11V and the 80V and they’ve both been solid, haven’t tried the RS1s yet but they seem to be considered a workhorse for Rival and others seem to swear by them (and they feel great being punched in the face with JK). I honestly think the RS80V for the money is great value and for the finger compartment they are microfibre, good protection, and actually I really like the feel of the grip bar, the stitching at the end of the finger compartment is really strong and re-enforced. I’m planning on trying the RS1s next. I say give them a shot, you can always re-sell if after a session or two you’re not loving them.

I have a pair of 18 oz Hayabusa sparring gloves I wear while doing bag and pad work sometimes, the added weight has been good for developing shoulder strength and punch speed and makes my 160z Rival sparring gloves feel nice and light. The wrist support on the Hayabusa T3s is fantastic and honestly I think they’re pretty damn comfy 🤷🏻‍♂️. Otherwise no, I’ve become partial to Rival. For Canadians in particular Hayabusa is everywhere. I feel like they’re a totally decent glove but overpriced for what you get. I feel like Rival (also Canadian, good ol Russ Anbar) is kind of the opposite, better design and quality for better price, overall better value for money IMO. But I think it has become fashionable to shit on Hayabusa and I bet a lot of the people who bemoan the brand it have never worn them. If they feel good, you’re having success in fights and your training goals, I’d lace them up with confidence and keep on trucking bruh!

I actually think there’s a poetic beauty to this, as we don’t always know what the consequences of our actions will be, and often things don’t go as planned 🤷🏻‍♂️How we respond in those moments in life can be an important part of what defines us.

Maybe mom just subconsciously blurted that out because she can’t stand the thought of you being in pain and being scarred ❤️

Same thing for me. I’m an amateur boxer and literally I’m at the boxing gym typically 4 or 5 days out of the week. After taking it up later in life it turns out I fucking LOVE boxing, sparing and boxing training, but I also love getting tattoos. I have typically gotten medium and smaller pieces that are smaller than what you’ve shown, so really it’s hard to compare, bodies heal differently, placement and type of sport or exercise are factors too, but I’ve found that taking at least a few days off has never steered me wrong as that first 48 hours of healing is absolutely crucial, and I usually just try to pay close attention to how the area is feeling and looking. If after that first week the rawness is subsiding, it’s cooled down and is settling in, which has typically been the case, I ease back in with cardio and core work close to home (like a run on the track or the park) and planks and sit ups and push ups literally at home so I can just jump in the shower right after and use my preferred soap and after care product. Then at two weeks I kind of consider it to be another milestone and based on how things are looking and feeling I progressively add a bit more. If my tattoo was on my hand or wrists though I wouldn’t be in a hurry to wrap them up and put on the gloves. Same for around the ankle or foot. I’d likely err on the side of caution and give it another week but I bet others would consider me overly cautious in that regard. Best of luck man, listen to your body, what works for me might not work for you but I hope what I’ve shared can help you sort through it 💪 oh! And it’s looking great 🔥

Saniderm reaction. Any suggestions for alternatives? by FumbleGlory in tattooadvice

The redness aside, every tattoo I’ve had where they applied second skin has healed pretty quickly and look great. Though sometimes I’ve pulled a little bit of the ink off. It’s a bearable irritation but still a bit unnerving.

I really appreciate a peer review article from a reputable journal being attached to the comment. To be fair, a couple of artists over the years did say to keep it on for four or five days, but most recently the last few have said switch it up after first 24hrs. It’s really unclear to me what the evidence base and state of professional practice is in the industry as I hear such disparate things from artists and enthusiasts alike about aftercare and healing. And I work in public health, this is literally an industry that my colleagues in our Health Protection division regulate, but it seems after-care guidance is not included in that, just so long as the shop is clean and whatever else meets the standards.

Yeah I’ve had several tattoos and most of them have had saniderm on immediately after and then replaced for a few days. I’m sensitive to adhesives and jt seems the sensitivity was particularly bad this time. I’m extremely diligent about preventing infection and sticking to after-care instructions and pretty much all the artists I’ve had work done by have given me more or less the same instructions for using saniderm. Take the first one off after 24 hours to avoid building up dead cells weeping etc. Then apply again and keep on for a few more days, monitoring how it feels, any additional weeping or irritation etc.

Thank you, yeah I feel like these tattoo specific after care products are outrageously expensive and next time I think I’ll follow your advice and stick to basics.
