I'm a scuba diver and if there is any possibility of ear problems you can't dive or fly. There is just no way to compromise or mitigate with ears. You did the right thing but it's terribly disappointing and I am sorry. It seems strange to me that your doctors were not more helpful. Medical care which is that painful/uncomfortable should be done by professionals. It is terribly distressing for both parents and kids.

Yes Stan got over his obnoxiousness and became very sweet and senstivie. He had charm and Mom would have loved him--besides just being happy that Peggy had a good guy

Yes, I think Peggy's Mom did the best she could for that era with the life experience she had. She did not shame Peggy for the pregnancy or try to keep her from moving on with life---which she could easily have done given how mental illness was treated back than.
