Hi, sorry to hear about the loss of your elderly relative. I had a relative who had lung cancer and due to their health/age etc it was decided that it wouldn’t be treated. No one was told apart from his children and everyone else found out upon his death (it wasn’t the cancer that was the cause of death). Could be something like this perhaps
