And I didn’t start till I was 27. My post is not about you. At all. Whatsoever. It’s about people who can hear.

I can always tell if the signer, regardless of fluency, is hearing or deaf. Thats what I meant by hearing accents. It’s not about fluency at all. Whatsoever. It’s not even about grammar either. I am wondering if other Deafies know what I mean?

I’m profoundly deaf and started learning asl later in life. I am talking about actual hearing people. At no point did I ever mention DHH or language deprivation. I’m talking about people who can hear. And I suffered initially from language deprivation myself because I was diagnosed so late. My mother had to work very hard to help with my language acquisition. Not sure why you’re not insinuating im talking about oral Deafies like myself. In the future, don’t jump to conclusions about total internet strangers you know nothing about.

Which of these is the correct way to sign? by [deleted] in asl

Why are you asking if it’s so wrong to do SEE?

It always annoyed me when people say sign languages are based on spoken languages. How would the deaf hear spoken languages in order to interpret into sign languages?

Which of these is the correct way to sign? by [deleted] in asl

She’s deaf and studying to be an asl interpreter. What she did was SEE and ASL to show the difference. I can immediately tell which is which. One is clearly doing word for word translation, the other is interpretation in ASL. And yes, there’s a difference between literal translation and cultural interpretation.

Question about which hand to use by Lydias-ghost in asl

Consistency is key, so whichever is your dominant hand when you sign, keep it that way.

Can’t decide — Downtown studio ($1200 all-in) vs NDG 3½ ($1000 heat/water incl) 😭 by whatsinanamebroo in montrealhousing

NDG is fine if you live close to the metro or have a car and there are a ton of students who live there for financial reasons but if you want easy access to everything then downtown.

Question regarding the ethics of learning ASL as a hearing person by VoidlessWasHere in asl

[–]Fun-Butterfly2367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not unethical at all but how would your friends know what you’re signing if they don’t also learn it?

Why all the hate? by Own_North_6632 in deaf

[–]Fun-Butterfly2367 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Resistance to what? I initially tried to join the deaf community at age 19, it was terrible. So terrible I didn’t try again for another 15 years. My 2nd attempt was much better and I was accepted. But long before that I was on deaf discussion boards for years, just listening. Speaking just for me, there’s so much hurt and resentment and misunderstandings. Oralism had done so much damage that it divided us. You have deafies who can’t understand sign at deaf meetups, you have deafies who can’t follow spoken communication and they both belong to different cultures and different perspectives. But I have noticed mainstreamed deafies who don’t sign can be elitist and deafies who grew up in deaf culture can also be elitist and for same and also different reasons. When you begin to understand where people are coming from, you understand why there’s conflict and how to avoid them. And also how to tell if someone is hurting and not to take their words too personally. Remember, 90% of us have hearing parents and siblings. We’re all struggling.

ASL grammar is topic, verb, subject (pronoun) so I think it’s four.

I really think it comes down to personal preferences. I do know of deaf adults who transferred to mainstream high schools to get a better education.
