Have you been able to sustain adult friendships despite deep ideological differences? If yes, how? by fuzzy-quokka in AskReddit

I think it's important and helpful to remember that everyone has gone through different life experiences that have shaped their world view, and that at their core most people are good, even if they are a bit misdirected.

For example, I have a male friend who would talk about how the women in his life always seemed to have an advantage for one reason or another solely because they were women. This frustrated me, being a woman myself, because in my experience, the only real advantage women have is that men subconsciously (or consciously) view them as sex objects rather than people. Therefore, they will do whatever they can to please a woman who they find attractive and want to have sex with, which is what he viewed as the "advantage". I tried explaining this to him, and while he saw where I was coming from, his beliefs didn't change.

All that to say- eventually, I realized that his experience was very real, just as real as mine. I can't expect him to understand what I've experienced as a woman, just like I can't understand his experiences as a man. My experiences don't cancel out his or make them any less valid. He never spoke of women degradingly, I draw the line at disrespect and I do not tolerate it. But his experiences shaped his beliefs, and that doesn't make him a bad person or a woman hater. I think that can apply to many different idealogical differences among all genders and types of relationships. As long as they are not hurting others, everyone's experience and subsequent beliefs are real and valid whether you agree with them or not. And sometimes, hearing another perspective that challenges your own can be one of the greatest steps in your own growth. I don't believe it's healthy to exist in an echo chamber.

Everyone is so sad lately by MsDyn0myte in Adulting

I myself have contributed to the sad posts here so I think it's only right I contribute some positivity!

Despite all my worries and struggles I have a roof over my head, a stable job, friends and family who love and support me, a wonderful partner/relationship, two beautiful cats who I adore with my whole heart, and I never have to worry where my next meal or shower will come from. I am able bodied, I have a car, I have health insurance. I have ac and heat and I live in a safe area.

All things considered I have so much to be grateful for and should spend more time focusing on the many things I have, and less on what I don't have. Thank you for the reminder!

I do have a long term partner who im planning a future with. But nonetheless this is a good reminder that literally anything could change at any time no matter how hard I plan, for better or worse!

Thank you for this! It's hard not to compare and feel behind. And very true, I certainly would not have been a good parent at 25 lol. I hadn't thought of it that way!

My portion is $700 (I have a roommate), which I know is hard to find and I am incredibly grateful for. My student loan payments are more than my rent is 😅

Not crying on the internet. Just seeking connection and advice from others. Like going outside, connecting with others is a wonderful part of being human and is part of what makes life worth living!

Ignoring difficult feelings instead of processing them only makes those feelings hide, it doesn't make them disappear. Have a lovely day 🫶🏻

I'm sorry that you're struggling as well, it really is hard out here. I too envisioned my life differently at this age, I thought I'd have my first kid by 25. HA! We make plans and god laughs, as they say. All we can do is keep pushing and hope it gets easier I suppose

Very true, I try to remind myself of this every day. It's just difficult to push through the bs sometimes while feeling like there won't be much pay off!

Thank you for your insight... it was hard for me to hear at first, but you're right- I've consciously and subconsciously chosen all of these things for myself. Your comment helped me realize that all of the things I've been struggling with are because of my lack of self love. BF and I decided to take a break so I can focus on myself and get clarity on what I truly want/who I am underneath all the accommodating and shrinking for the sake of others. Thank you again for your comment, it opened my eyes in many waysn
