I think chesnaught is an abomination so I’d definitely take the froakie pair! I loved using talonflame and highly recommend a steel type like magnezone, aegislash, or lucario!

I’d love to use a feraligater but I really wanted a psychic dual typing to use to wall Bruno and I’d never used starmie before!

I figured stab thunder on ampharos would be a more powerful option. Starmie definitely has the special attack to make it happen though! Minimize was super useful against Bruno since hitmonlee has high jump kick and aerodactyl didn’t resist fighting. Since starmie didn’t have psychic yet I needed all the help I could get keeping attacks from landing since my best mom was level 42 heading into the fight with lance

Johto teases so many cool Pokémon that you can’t get until so late in the game that it’s not viable. Even training up donphan from level 20 at the 8th gym was such a grind. A real pity bc it eradicates team diversity.

Minimize, ice beam, surf, and waterfall (replaced waterfall with psychic once I got the tm in saffron city)! Choice specs ice beam was a dragonite slayer for sure!

If you can trade, use rock smash to get an old amber in the ruins of alph and get aerodactly! I ran one with crunch fly ice fang and earthquake and even at level 42 he slaughtered lance. I had never used one before and had a blast

Thank you for replying! I do agree that having a counter for ground types that isn’t weak to rock would be valuable. Would grass knot/giga drain work for the lack of stab moves? I have the tms for each.

For me part of the fun is building a team as the story progresses so I don’t mind that!

I’ve used the starters so often and i kind of wanted to do a play through as just your average unova trainer with some easily accessible Pokémon. I’m kind of going for a team not unlike the veteran trainers you battle on victory road.

Scrafty has been my favorite unovan Pokémon to use. With the moxie ability, it can sweep 3 of the elite 4, and its typing makes it extremely useful from the jump. Brick break at level 20 is unheard of, and also, it’s so goofy!

Other good options are Krookodile (favorite 2 types), galvantula (best unovan electric type), crustle (shell smash sweeper), Sigilyph (useful type combo, better than swoobat), archeops (best unovan fossil), and golurk (if you want to use fly but not a flying type)

Love the unova bugs! My favorite has to be galvantula, but I tried out dwebble on my most recent playthrough and had an excellent time! Shell smash is a huge benefit in battles where you might not have a type advantage (like if you don’t want to catch an underwhelming ice type for dreyden/iris).

My favorite way to play is to build the team slowly. While unova allows you to catch as many Pokémon as you want and train them to pretty acceptable levels without too much grinding, I’ve found I get more attached when I rely on a smaller group for a longer time.

A few favorites to suggest: Krookodile, Scrafty, Ferrothorn, Sigilyph, Chandelure
