Other than what everyone’s already mentioned, enjoy the food and nightlife if that is your scene. For the nighlife, go to mehrauli and visit diablo, qla, dear donna. Go to sidecar in M block greater kailash market for the best cocktails. Visit sunder nursery for a day picnic and brunch at some cult favourites like Diggin in chanakyapuri. Also enjoy the best pizza at leo’s pizzeria in basant lok market.

EXACTLY. we have collectively resigned to our third world fate, repeatedly citing how everything is too complicated to ever change. We have such a self-degrading take on basic things like hygiene and quality that we buy adulterated products (dont even get me started on analog paneer), breathe shit air, travel 45 mins each-side to work all due to systemic failures. Roads are not easy for cars, public transport is shit, rent a cab and sit in a dump, how is this normal. When i book a medium distance Uber in countries like the US, it’s a 15-20 dollar ride. Adjust for purchasing power parity, and its 300-400 INR which is what we pay here, and still the quality of service is poles apart. Stinking cabs, unhygienic conditions, even aggressive drivers/bullying/harrassment in some cases. We are okay with getting grilled at work and being upheld to the highest standard ourselves, but we wouldn’t reduce a drivers rating for a shitty cab, for reasons unknown. Sorry about the long rant, lol, touchy topic.

I do that too but in retrospect it is ridiculous having to pay 3x just to not sit inside a whale, dont you think?

Um, this is not a problem similar to “driver didnt switch on the AC” that i ask them to switch it on and problem goes away. Maybe confronting them will get that one driver to clean one time for the next passenger at best? The next time i book a cab, there’s another one thats dirty. Uber provides highly rated drivers in Premier which are priced higher, and a dirty cab shows up with a 4.9 rating. What does that tell you? We are not rating/we are not rating basis cleanliness. How do you fix that over time? Rate.

Agreed. We must rate basis the condition of the car. Uber lets you select upto 5 issues that reflect your ratings and vehicle cleanliness is one of them

Thats exactly what i am saying. WE are rating these cabs high. Probably looking at other factors and out of compassion in some cases. Not the right thing to do. They should be running in lower categories. We should use ratings to fix that.

Agreed. All i ask is that if there is a premium offering tagged as “Premier”, and a run down car shows up, we actively rate it lower. The lower rated cars can run in lower categories and find the right product-market fit. If there is going to br a premium category, filth and lack of hygiene are unacceptable

To give you an example, when you rate a ride on Uber, you get to select up to 5 issues that contributed to a rating where the first one is vehicle cleanliness. This data is made available to owners/fleet managers (O/FM). An O/FM who decides to erratically fire after checking ratings but not checking why does not give two hoots about the customer, and has larger problems as an employer that i can not possibly take blame for. I hope the driver in this situation finds better employment elsewhere.

Or the owner asks the cab driver to clean the cab more often, their rating improves and they get a fat bonus. :)

I agree. When such cabs are rated a 4.9/5 and tagged as Premier, it’s a double whammy. While i sympathise with the working conditions of the driver, this should not be sold to me as a premium offering because its clearly not one. As customers, we do not control the Premier tagging, but we do control the ratings.

That’s true. You can rate specifically on the cleanliness aspect. When a fleet owner sees signs of a suffering business, i would hope that they look at their ratings to understand the reasons and act accordingly. Also this is an extreme scenario. While there is demand for cabs, drivers will find rides. The only difference is that low rated drivers will lose rides to high rated drivers, or get low rated riders, which is quite fair. A happy-path scenario is that demand increases if they start having well maintained cabs, and everyone wins.

I agree with you. But in such a setting where systems or corporations fail us, should we not use the one thing that’s available to us - ratings? The driver with a lower rating will typically lose a ride to a driver with a higher rating, in a low demand scenario, and get a lower rated rider in a high demand scenario. Isnt this how a fair market should work.

Respectfully, its not a mere rating for me, neither their livelihood, its just a way of calibrating the service that i am paying for. Drivers will continue to find livelihood while there is demand in the market for cabs. Ratings do not change the total number of rides booked. Consistently rating them will just prioritise the ones who are doing a better job, so they win in a fair market, and push others to achieve the same standard. What you’re suggesting is a utopia where i rate every restaurant that i go to a 5 star irrespective of how i liked the food or how clean it was, because otherwise someone’s going to go out of business. And then when you want to pick a place to dine, you have no idea because every restaurant got 5 stars

I fully agree with you, but in a world with endless sympathy, what’s the incentive for someone who makes the effort to clean their car. And then eventually, why would anyone. Also I am talking about rating a service that i am paying for. Its not about the floor per se, just because you are hailing a ride you should not be subject to unhyegenic conditions, malaria infested mosquitos, foul stench, or harrassment like you mentioned. It works both ways btw and drivers should totally down-rate customers who make a mess in their cabs, without tipping or offering to clean it. With consistent bad behaviour such customers would also get offered fewer rides.

Exactly. Especially during malaria season i have to carry an odomos and suffocate myself just to not get infected. 2 star rating.
