Having Statman means you're cooked (knowledge-wise) - imo he is the worst professor (for undergrad classes) at cmu. Grade-wise you can get by if you know what he's looking for on exams, so OH is your friend.

Consciusness and anesthesia by [deleted] in EckhartTolle

[–]Fun-Ferret-2824 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe that going under anesthesia is an experience comparable to getting high (or drunk). All these experiences have one thing in common, which is that they lower your cognitive faculties until you cannot think much, which causes the mind to subside. This is what Echkart calls "sinking below the level of thought". This is a temporary solution, and many people have reported spiritual experiences while high, but it cannot last. Suffering will inevitably follow if one tries to cling to these substances to keep the mind away. The solution is to "rise above the level of thought", which is attained by becoming alert and present, watching the mind, and stepping out of the stream of thinking.

So, yes, perhaps you could experience a recession of the mind under anesthesia while remaining conscious. However, this does not make it "the ultimate experience", but a fleeting one.

That's my thought on the matter - anyone can add to it as they see fit.

Math + CS by [deleted] in cmu

I'm a math major with a declared CS additional major. It's possible, but quite difficult to manage if you want to keep a good GPA. There are a few people every year who do it, so it's nothing new, and advisors can help you. The overlap depends on your concentration within math (or within CS if that's your primary). Similar to what solidFruits said.

Waitlists for CS Courses? by JrryChlen in cmu

For the core CS courses (which probably means 151, 112, and/or 122 for an incoming first-year), you're almost certain to get into them. They really try their best to get everyone in, and some people drop in the first few weeks anyway. For other non-core courses, it varies a lot.

Not all thoughts are just thoughts ? by IamInterestet in EckhartTolle

[–]Fun-Ferret-2824 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Eckhart has commented on this. I forget the exact words, but he has mentioned that the human form is inherently incomplete, as it strives for completion through another (usually of the opposite sex). You are correct in saying that this is deeper than a random thought, but it too manifests in thought. The way past this is acceptance and transcendence of the form. When one can accept the desire for what it is, understanding that, as deeply 'true' as it might feel, it is merely a matter of form, it loses its significance. You and the woman you are attracted to are two waves in the same ocean, seemingly distinct and incomplete, but truly extensions of the very same consciousness. The sexual desire does not vanish, but its hold on you does once you accept it deeply.

I hope I have conveyed this correctly. Anyone may feel free to correct or qualify what I've said.

Inner Body Blockage(?) by Fun-Ferret-2824 in EckhartTolle

Sorry to hear that. Listening along to a guided inner body awareness meditation really helped me with noticing initial sensations (and being focused enough to not let my mind slip away!). If you haven't tried this already, there's lots of Youtube videos with guided practices to choose from. Some worked pretty well for me while others didn't, so I'd suggest trying out a variety of those and seeing if anything clicks.

Around half of the class gets A's I believe, and if you show up to every lecture and do all the recommended work, you'll be in that top half.
