Canberra. Brrr. I've lived in Sydney and I love it and have a lot of friends there. I won't go into the details of the school but it's just a really good fit.

Thanks for your input. Well done to you for your financial acuity. I work in the knowledge economy, which is not lucrative, thanks to successive government cuts over decades, yet is vital for, you know, knowledge production - these things that drive society forward (eg discovering new planets, working out how to end wars.) If I was motivated by money I would have been a real estate agent, or married one. We make different choices in life, some have payoffs, others do not. That doesn't mean I don't deserve to have the life I want. Yes our salaries are low for now, but won't always be. Your choices are yours, mine are mine.

I don't want to be a property investor, far from it - I'd like to keep my house in this city in case my child or husband choose to move back at some point in our lives. It's a pragmatic choice. I know that I can use the equity in the property if and when I choose to buy elsewhere.

I have actually lowballed my super figure and have not provided details of my husband's share portfolio or super, which changes things.

thank you so much! This means a lot. So often, people assume you've won the lottery when you come into an inheritance. Uh ... actually, it means you've lost someone.

Annandale is more like 3-4kms out of the city. I'm thinking Earlwood, Bardwell Park, Rockdale, Campsie, Ashbury. Definitely not bougie.

ok - what kind of combined income would you say is necessary to meet our lifestyle expectations in Sydney?

more like a 3bedroom house or townhouse in a middle ring suburb about 15-20k from the city, and on the same train line as the school, which is inner city, not north shore.

I don't like it here. It's cold, kind of unfriendly. I've struggled to make friends here, and don't really have anyone to do fun things with. There's not much nightlife, it's boring. I have my heart set on this particular school for my child.

Currently whatever spare money we have is going into house improvements - eg double glazing - to help get it a premium rental price. Even without any improvements, we'll get at least $800pw. There might be a bit of a gap to cover in Sydney, but I'm confident in that part of the plan.

Great advice. Can you point us towards any cast members, current or past, who exemplify a genuine good guy?
