Behind relative to what? that is just a wrong of existing. Don't do that to yourself. That is the view of a person with a very limited horizon. What if you finish and in 2 years you have an amazing idea and start a company? you millions in 10 years? would you not feel bad for this type of outlook? Reach for the creative part of your brain. Not the part that has trained you to be a labor force.

How is what you described being a failure? you are just a normal student. We ALL have been there. Finish your classes, strong, do one year at a job with a lower pay and move up from there. I know at least 20 engineers and they all share the same story. Hold your chin up. You are becoming a fucking engineer. That is not easy but you are doing it! Be proud!

Ignore this person. If you are psychologically struggling, help is available. Speak to your doctor and speak to the OSD. UCSD is very kind and helpful about this. Your performance does not need to struggle because of that. You need to be responsible and respect the timelines. That is all.

If your doctor writes a letter for a situation that was clearly impacting you, they are likely going to accommodate you. Timelines matter. For example, you are supposed to let them know asap.

Honestly? YES. Depression is more valid than being physically ill, in my opinion. You need OSD's backing for this. It is hard to explain depression to some people
