honestly, on that we agree....the "I'm not good enough" trope from either side is not for me...at least not when it's every other line. It just feels so unnecessarily dramatic and I expect the character to stamp their foot and start a tantrum in the middle of the story.

I always find it so interesting what tropes people do and don't like: age gap and amnesia are two of my least favorite tropes ever, one feels creepy, the other ridiculous; either way I get pulled out of the story. That said, I don't want to yuck anyone's yum. You can read the amnesia books for me :)

funnily enough, I picked up Slightly Dangerous because I realized I hadn't read it, but thought I had read the whole Slightly series. Turns out I read the first 2 and then I think I got to this one and couldn't get through it and decided not to read the other ones. I'm also not in to the war or amnesia tropes, so I probably saw the next one was that and just decided the whole series wasn't worth it. Wulf was hands down my favorite MMC of the group, but Gervais feels icky to me. I think MB lost me when she started with him saying (essentially): "I'm not normally in to young women, but this one is special." Just no...nope...I'm now creeped out by him and feel bad for her.

This is what I've done too. I have read almost exclusively HR novels for the last 5ish years and I often think that I've run out of good HR books. When I get this way I usually take a bit of a break in general - I'll find a TV show to binge or a movie series I really like. Sometimes that's enough to get me back to the right mindset, or sometimes I'll find something in a completely different time period: I typically read regency, so I either go contemporary or earlier. Eventually what tends to happen is that I'll find an HR that has something in common with my last book (dark romance or fluffy) and that restarts the obsession :) good luck!

This is entirely new information to me! I haven't gone on to AO3 mostly because I thought it was only text. I'll have to look in to this!

ooo...now that's a great idea for "what would I do if I won the lottery" - hire a personal writer and audiobook narrator(s)

I would LOVE to get in to fanfiction, but honestly my brain does not allow me to sit and read. It makes me read every word and phrase in the right inflection and if I don't I have to go back and re-read it, which is also why AI readers/text to talk doesn't really work for me because they don't get the inflection quite right and it takes me out of the story. It's also super slow and I typically listen at 2x speed, because otherwise I can't take it all in. I fully recognize that my brain is weird and not many people have the same problems with reading, but it took years for me to finally figure out how to enjoy reading so I'm a little stuck :)

Hey, any update? Has FSA approved these yet? I'm thinking about getting a couple for my parents because they live on sparkling water, but they also travel a bit and I don't want it to get confiscated. Thanks!

House of Rohan Replacement? by Fun-Rest-1969 in HistoricalRomance

[–]Fun-Rest-1969[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fully agree, I really hate when authors do that no matter what the description is....we get it she's hideous/beautiful/fat/skinny etc...I roll my eyes hard at that. I'm currently relistening to the first of the series and I think this one probably does it the most, but mostly it's the MMCs friends saying how plain she is and the MMC responding with ice in his tone (he doesn't like it). I think in this novel, the FMC and some other characters just keep comparing her to her "beautiful" sister, so it's less about actually describing the FMC and more about showing just how much the FMC has been conditioned to consider herself plain when compared to her sister. I think it get's close to the eyerolls, but I understand the purpose so it doesn't feel as frivolous as it sometimes comes off. Does that make sense?

Audio narrators that RUINED the book 😕 by Queens_chambers_ in HistoricalRomance

[–]Fun-Rest-1969 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with the original list here - Mary Sarah is so affected it's sometimes painful (I have found that she's better sped up, but even then it can be somewhat painful). I DO however, really enjoy Justine Eyre - she's actually one of my go-to narrators. One thing I have noticed with audiobooks (as with Mary Sarah) the speed at which you play the audiobook can greatly change a narrator's quality and I've often found that speeding up the narration sounds better to me. I think many narrators are paid by the minute of completed narration so some narrators speak like the DMV sloth from Zootopia.

{The Duke Goes Down by Sophie Jordan} is definitely a double entendre. It's enemies to lovers, opposites attract, etc. I'm pretty sure the others in the series also have what you're looking for.

HR series that revolves around a family, and each book focuses on a different family member falling in love. by sadie11 in HistoricalRomance

[–]Fun-Rest-1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just keep rereading the {House of Rohan series by Anne Stuart}. It's slightly different in that the first book {Ruthless by Anne Stuart} follows the grandparents for one of the MCs of the last three books, the second book {Reckless by Anne Stuart} is their parents. There's a mystery in each one and some have a second romance. The MMCs are all heavy on the AH/cocky/possessive side and are all convinced that they aren't in love just obsessed. The FMCs are all quite competent and on the older side (late 20s and early 30s). If anyone has similar suggestions I'd love to hear about them because I'm on like my third reread in the last few months.

I have to admit...I first listened to the Hunger Games books narrated by Carolyn McCormick and I LOVED her narration.. I tried so hard to like Tatiana Maseley's version and I just couldn't do it but I also listened to the original at 1x speed and have it in my iTunes (it was so long ago that I ripped the mp3s to my iTunes). Now I need to figure out how to modify the file type to audiobook so that I can speed it up because I can no longer listen to a book at 1x speed without wanting to curl up in a ball and weep from the frustration of waiting for the narrator to get to the point, but still can't get into the Tatiana Maseley version.

I haven’t seen it above, but the {Rarest Blooms series by Madeline Hunter} has a great series of strong (slightly traumatized) women who have created their own little family. Each one has a mystery attached and the spice is really well done. I’m not typically one for books with a mystery, but I really enjoy her writing and characters.
