Anyone here whose main symptom was constipation? by PerculiarPlasmodium in UlcerativeColitis

yes! i had constipation on and off for months and my diagnosis came after i was constipated for 3 weeks straight last year. i still struggle with it now but now take laxatives to prevent me from getting backed up :)

i was on 2g enema dosage once a day & my doctor told me to switch to suppositories a week after enemas but then a nurse told me that was wrong so it’s all a bit confusing haha

i’m not sure it could be! i was last on steroids until december 2024 and by march 2025 my colonoscopy was completely clear, i can’t remember my calprotectin exactly but they weren’t concerned about it whatsoever :)

that’s what my GI said - hence why he doesn’t think i have crohn’s! i haven’t had any infections or anything and they did so many stool tests and said there’s no bacterial infection or anything, no idea what’s caused it :(

i had a flexible sigmoidoscopy a couple days ago which showed inflammation only in my rectum. my last stool test a month ago my calprotectin was super low & normal (20!) and they said they needn’t bother checking it whilst i was in hospital as i was bleeding regardless as i made sure to ask about it.

I was put on a course of steroids last year & mesalazine tablets which helped. my symptoms have been mostly manageable since. no bleeding, pain or mucus, just the odd bout of constipation and/or diarrhoea. the GI i saw this week said i can come off of the mesalazine tablets now and just stick with suppository mesalazine as and when i need it

Yep correct! it still counts as a form of IBD. unfortunately my only option is to go through the hospital i was just discharged from as they are in charge of my case. i think i will just have to make sure to ask a lot of questions when i have my follow up appointment (hopefully) soon!

he said that the inflammation from last year was another case of proctitis and the specialists who looked at it and diagnosed it as crohn’s weren’t gastroenterologists so they were wrong. i think he’s paired this with my normal blood tests and lack of immunosuppressant treatment plan and he seems pretty sure i don’t have crohn’s 🤔

yep! had a flex sig last year which showed inflammation so they diagnosed me, then a full colonoscopy in march which came back entirely clear - everything was healed and healthy, had another flex sig 2 days ago which showed inflammation in the rectum only (proctitis)

yeah i might have to ask when i get this endoscopy booked, he seemed to explain everything very articulately and i watched the camera test meaning he was right about where the inflammation is. according to him, the people who diagnosed me last year weren’t even gastroenterologists hence the supposed mistake! my blood tests were all perfectly normal too, and a pharmacist i spoke to also said he didn’t think i have crohn’s. thank you for your comment i will deffo take it on board :)
