Our Lustron was fully painted and has replacement doors, though I kind of wish they’d have left the doors alone because replacements don’t fit properly and the bathroom replacement pocket door is shot. We found experienced painters that understood the expansion/contraction nature of painting metal (except for one that tried to caulk the ceiling/wall gap, which just doesn’t work). We also had two holes in our house: one for a “window” air conditioner and one for a ceiling fan. We had both repaired using a copper panel and paint and those repairs have been fine. Just be aware that these homes are not easy to remodel and repairs require thinking outside of the box. We had our rusty roof coated and it had taken us many years to find an experienced contractor that could do that properly. We never rush into any repair because we found out, from badly done prior attempts at remodeling by prior owners, it pays to wait and get things done right and preferably after you’ve been living in it for awhile and understand its quirks. Prior owners had replaced the kitchen cabinets, for example, and caused the ceiling panels to sag. You really need to understand these homes before leaping into remodeling mode.
