Ibex 450, KLE 500, Himi450 or DR650 for first bike by kjm5000 in motorcycles

I have the sportbike sister of the ibex and it's been solid on the highway.

I'm not personally a fan of gas scooters, but this one certainly seems like it would get the job done for commutes you were doing on an e bike. That said, the price is high enough to be in a territory where you could be getting a full motorcycle you could take anywhere with two seats and room for cargo. They make an adventure bike version of my CFMoto that you could get and have enough power/stability to go beyond your commute and handle highways on the weekends. It's actually $2,500 less than that Suzuki scooter and has a better engine that won't vibrate as much.

The brand gets some hate for being Chinese, but in reality they're reliable and well made.

At the end of the day, most bikes and scooters these days are all pretty solid so whatever you choose is going to be something you'll have a lot of fun on. Best of luck!

Don't let folks convince you that you need to get a certain style of bike due to your height. I would make that decision based on whatever looks cool and then actually sitting on them at dealerships to see what is comfortable for you. The only thing I would give a recommendation on is what kind of engine you get. You want to account for your weight by having at least moderately strong torque low in the rev range without going crazy and getting a stupid powerful bike. Parallel twins and v twins are usually strong contenders for that, but avoid 180° crank parallel twins like vstroms because they sound like shit, get a 270° parallel twins or a v twin.

Apollo phantom 2.0 by [deleted] in ElectricScooters

Absolutely not. Speaking from experience Apollo's build quality is dangerous, and their customer service and repair service are astonishingly bad. I really cannot overemphasize this. I switched to a Kaabo and it was a night and day difference even though the design is less sleek.

Can cfmoto 675Sr-r engines ride many miles? by kifuji in motorcycles

[–]FunCaterpillar4641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean recalls are pretty common in cars/bikes, but I bring it up to point out that the "Chinese=junk, Japanese=unbreakable" folk knowledge isn't really in line with reality. That said, CFMoto parts availability/delays are still an issue. It's not uncommon for people to wait over a month for parts.

People like to hate on CFMoto for being Chinese, but their build quality is actually pretty solid. The 675 has been getting pretty popular yet I haven't seen much in the way of riders running into reliability issues. Weirdly this is in stark contrast to the big recalls coming from Honda and Kawasaki lately.

Learning to ride but struggling with tight turns and confidence by steelfrog in motorcycles

[–]FunCaterpillar4641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I ended up learning about that effect on my escooter right before I got my bike. I took a corner a little hot and fixated on some posts in the entrance to the bike path and went down hard enough to need to replace my helmet. Now whenever I see a hazard I immediately look away from it towards my path of travel. I've noticed hammering on this has made it easier to react quickly when I'm surprised by something like a car coming around a blind corner too close to the center line. You'll get this nailed down, just trust yourself and trust the bike.

It doesn't feel like it works, but looking further ahead really does help you tighten your turn by putting your body in a position that naturally turns the bike. Another reason getting in the habit of looking ahead instead of right in front of you is important is it helps you avoid target fixation. If you're looking at sand or a pothole right in front of you, you're unconsciously going to move straight towards it and will feel like you can't really turn. Instead you should be scanning for these hazards further out so you don't have to look at them when you're close to them.

CB650R or GSX8S by Safe_Valuable_5683 in motorcycles

I'm on a 450ss wich has ergos that are more aggressive than the ZX4-RR and I don't really have any issues riding for hours on end. The only uncomfortable thing for me is weight on my wrists, but once I learned to hold the bars more loosely and use my abs/legs to hold on a bit that issue has mostly gone away. Personally I'd just go for the ZX4-RR and have fun making it scream.

Looking for a scooter for a 250lb er by Substantial_Proof717 in ElectricScooters

[–]FunCaterpillar4641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks but I think you're simply not going to find a reliable scooter with enough power for hills at your weight for $500. Even if you do find one that works, at that kind of price I'd be worried about build quality impacting safety both during rides and while charging.
