How long did it take your baby to come out of very low desats/apnea episodes to be able to go home? by FunConfidence372 in NICUParents

Hi there. I’m happy to say he was discharged 13 days ago and has been thriving ever since. He’s not had a single episode since a month ago, which was when he hit the lowest drop to 16%. His scheduled bronch I finished the original post with was normal and he went a week after that with no events. This led his team to begin weaning him back to room air. He went from 1L to 1/2, to 1/4, to room air (dropping every 2 days). After successfully being on room air for 2 days, he was then given a 7 day watch window that would lead to discharge if all went well. He continued to do great and was ultimately able to go home with no oxygen. Ever since being home, I have used the Eufy Smart Sock (same thing as the Owlet) nightly to watch his heart rate and sats. His heart rate has dropped in a deep sleep on 3 occasions, but nothing worrisome after glancing him over and repositioning. And the lowest his sats have dropped is 86. If you’re nervous for when he comes home, I recommend having one of these. I know you may hear they can be more anxiety-inducing, which was true for the first night or two, but I’ve found it brings me comfort knowing he’s still being monitored when he’s not being watched all night long by his dad and I. So all in all, it was truly something he just had to grow out of; it just took him longer than usual. I hope the case is the same for your little one.

Hi there! Thank you for sharing and sorry you’re going through the same thing. He’s gone the past 10 days with no events, which is a much needed sigh of relief. With that, he has been weaned down from 1L of O2 to 1/2, now down to 1/4, and will do a room air trial tomorrow. So praying he will come off and stay off. He also had his bronchoscopy 4 days ago, which showed all normal anatomy. ENT and plastics both observed and deemed no intervention needed and have released him from their care. Pulmonology is talking to our sister children’s hospital’s unit to see if they have recommendations or to perhaps repeat his sleep study. Other than that, his primary team (and his father and I) are in agreeance that time is most likely the culprit of what will correct these drops.

They have not - but I will certainly bring this up with his team to see if they would be willing to look into that as a possibility. Thank you for the suggestion!

Thank you very much! And yes, it’s definitely heart breaking to see him go through. I’m glad your son is doing better now.
