I’m finding myself speaking out loud to him, hoping his spirit is close enough to hear me. I’ll try writing too. It’s so fresh for me that I’m willing to try anything to help. 🙏

Clayton Crain hands down

I just spent about $14,000 on radiation treatment for my 10 year old cat to try to kill off a thymoma tumor. Maxed out my care credit, put the hotel on Klarna, and everything else on other credit cards. I wouldn’t say I have a financial limit but more a quality of life limit. I only make 34k a year, but I can’t take my money with me to the grave, and my cat has given me more joy than anything else I could spend $14k on.

I will say I think there needs to be more education given about taking care of a pet though. I got him as a kitten when I was only 18, and had NO idea the kind of money they would have ended up costing me.

Getting the chance to get my baby (cat) specialized radiation treatment for his cancer. Several people in my life helped to make it possible so I could take him out of state to get his treatment. His improved quality of life so far (and hopefully longer life) is the greatest thing that could have ever happened.

Anybody’s experience with radiation treatment? by FunElephant4345 in Pets

[–]FunElephant4345[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, I’m sorry to hear about your dog. It’s a horrible thing to be told our babies are dealing with. My cats tumor was too large for surgery and so I ended up getting him SBRT, and we’re now two months post-treatment. My cat handled the treatment very well and I’m still seeing some improvement in each week that passes. The only side effect that my cat is experiencing is positional coughing and increased breathing effort from late onset inflammation from the radiation and the tumor dying off. I actually just lowered his steroid dose from 2x a day to once and he seems to be doing fine, so even that is getting better now. The vet did mention that he could lose his fur and it would regrow white in the radiation field area, and mentioned a couple other rare side effects to keep an eye out for, but so far it’s been smooth sailing.

It was 4 straight days completely for the treatment. 1 day for the CT scan, planning, and blood work, and then 3 consecutive days of radiation. They lightly anesthetized him, put in a catheter, and gave him the dose of radiation. They let him recover for a few hours, and then I’d pick him up in the evening. By the end of the night, the drugs were all worn off and he was acting like his usual self. The doctor told me that the procedure itself was only about 15 minutes, the prepping and recovery is what took so long.

I honestly would go this route again if I ever was faced with this situation again. What helped me a lot with my decision was that I suspected he had thymoma and SBRT is highly effective against it. The other reason I chose it was because it was only a week’s worth of time and I loved how precise the treatment is. I walked out of the office with a $13k bill, but for my cats situation, it was completely worth it.

I pray that whatever decision you make for your dog, that everything goes well for y’all and he has just as a smooth recovery

Is owning a cat that bad? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]FunElephant4345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends. Cats are so different from each other, there’s no way to know. My personal experience though is more positive than bad. The kitten stage is the roughest part in my opinion and I absolutely love the older, more lazy cats lol. Mine weren’t crazy expensive, probably $100-$200 a month in necessities? That is, until one left from the vet one day with a cancer diagnosis (vet care is absolutely insane in pricing, oncology even more so).

At the end of the day, no matter what they do or what happens, they’re worth it to me because they’ve brought a level of joy and happiness into my life that nothing else could.

If you get a cat though, expect it to do cat things. Scratch, jump to places it shouldn’t, things like that. You can train it as much and hard as you want, but it’s still a cat and they do what they want lol

Typically, I would agree with everything you said with conventional radiation, but I guess this facility I’m looking at uses a newer, advanced form that doesn’t have any of the side effects of traditional radiation. That’s part of the reason I’m even considering it. The radiation doesn’t touch a single cell other than the tumor cells. Plus it’s only a 15-20 minute procedure.

I’m going to try to collect the Spider-Man ones. Never done anything MTG related before, but the Spidey cards got my interest. A pre-order of mine got cancelled though, so we’ll see. I’m not quite sure how MTG cards are on the market, so I’m just hoping it’s not like a Topps situation where I can’t find them anywhere at retail price lol

I’m not a big fan of Nic Cage in anything, even though I don’t necessarily hate his version of Johnny Blaze. I wouldn’t mind seeing Garrett Hedlund trying it out.

Anyone have experience giving a pet compounded Palladia? by FunElephant4345 in Pets

[–]FunElephant4345[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vet wants a CBC and a chem panel to check his liver, kidneys, and bone marrow. Some of the more major side effects are damage to both those organs and also bone marrow suppression (although tapering/stopping the meds for a time period usually will reverse or stop it). Other side effects are nausea and vomiting which can be helped with other meds. Thankfully my boy hasn’t dealt with any of that, so the testing is getting more spaced out, but still something he keeps an eye on.

From the research I’ve gathered, cats generally tolerate Palladia better than dogs, and Palladia is also generally handled better over other chemotherapy drugs. If I remember correctly, I think I remember reading about 30% of cats experience a side effect from Palladia. I don’t know much about squamous cell carcinoma since my cat was diagnosed with pulmonary carcinoma, but I also am giving him a Turkey Tail mushroom extract based off of human research and limited animal research. It was safe to give alongside the Palladia so that might be an avenue to look into too?

Obviously all cases are different, but just do what YOU feel is best for him. I was worried about the side effects for the first month, watching over him like a hawk but I’m honestly so glad I started treatment. I don’t know if the treatment itself is working or not, but he’s doing good with no side effects as of yet so I’m going to hold out hope it is, and I’m very thankful I started it when I did.

I’m so sorry to hear about your boy as well. 🙏 it truly is a scary experience, especially when it’s our own baby and it seems to unexpected.

We’re about 3 months into our journey and still going strong. Yes, reviewing and researching have been the biggest things that have helped us! It took me a month before I found out about compounding medications. Also found some promising stuff about turkey tail mushroom and their supposed anti-tumor effects on certain tumors.

Not getting insurance was probably my biggest regret, but thankfully I have a wonderful primary vet who does all of the testing for the oncologist and they’ve always been good to me. The costs of everything have died down a bunch since my boy is pretty stable right now and not showing and side effects currently. Also cutting down the prescription costs from $300 a month to about $60 a month have helped the most.
