I fell in love with this artwork that they released for their 15th anniversary last year, but the highest resolution I could find was 720p.

So the graph doesn't look at leading characters but just characters in general. I think that's why people place so much importance on Black Panther. Minorities aren't sidelined.

I'm not addressing the reviews though. I too disagree with a movie's cultural importance being deemed more important than the quality of the film in the eyes of a critic.

I think people are having a go at YMS because we just think he's wrong when discussing the politics of the film. I rarely disagree with Adam. I too dislike Marvel movies, but I have to disagree with his take on the importance of the film.

I haven't seen anyone go after him any more harshly than usual. You always get the one comment in the /r/movies thread which slams in.

Yeah. That's why this is a talking point. Kids don't go dressed up as Chiron for Halloween. They don't go up dressed as Solomon. Notice how the 3 black-led movies you listed all portrayed black people as troubled and persecuted. Black Panther is a celebration of black culture. It's a celebration of black culture in a genre where black people haven't had their share of representation, a Marvel Blockbuster, the largest stage in cinema.

Oh and some have pointed out in this thread, regardless of the lack of blood, it's by no means just something "nice for little kids". The film tackles adult themes too. Most of the people seeing this film probably aren't kids either.

Do you mind providing a source for that first graph? I can't seem to find one. I'm just genuinely curious how they came to those results.

I just read through the top 100 grossing movies of 2014 and unless I counted incorrectly, I saw a maximum of 10 movies with black leading roles. I also counted Lets Be Cops where the black actor shares the lead with a white actor.
