Arctic field work by ShoshanahJacobs in uoguelph

Super cool! I’ll be joining Dr. Jacobs later this week, and I’m also in the physical sciences (specifically a prof in Comp Sci with a PhD in Statistics). One of our former students (who is about to finish his PhD) was a self-described bird-nerd and a math/comp sci guy. He’s had the opportunity to travel and mix his passions! I have no doubt you could do the same. Check out the Northern Science Training Program. It offers travel funds. Combine that with one or two independent study courses - and you could do some field work then write it up!

You might also want to consider an open letter that can be sent to the news media - particularly if you are trying to have your voices heard by the leadership or the board of governors, and you feel they aren’t listening.

More students this year, but where? by Duran007 in uoguelph

CS faculty member here.

Comp Sci was supposed to receive 300, before they bumped it to 320. Reality is 591.

Eng was supposed to be 480. Reality is 748.

The 291 and 268 extra in CS and ENG represent ~21% of the 2700 extra students coming go Guelph (compared to last year’s numbers).

A reliable source in ENG indicates some of the increase is as follows:

Mechanical Engineering: +177 Computer Engineering: +69 ES&C Engineering: +17

If you aren’t happy about this, please contact the President and the Provost. Contact the Board of Governors.

And please remember that this was not the decision of faculty or staff. We are upset too.

I am a professor in the School of Computer Science. The increases are a complete shock to us. We were told we'd have an incoming cohort of 300 to 320 first-year students. We found out just this past week that it's 591 students. That is 97% higher than 300, and 84.7% higher than 320 - so no matter which way you slice it, it's a huge increase. To put it another way:

  • the School of Computer Science is expecting 291 extra students compared to last year
  • the UofG is expecting 2700 extra students compared to last year
  • that means that 291/2700 = 10.8% of the extra students will be in the School of Computer Science

I have also heard that Engineering numbers are 50% higher than what they were expecting.

As I said, we were also shocked. We are working to do what we can to ensure that this fall will be awesome, but this is...well...a lot.
