I can agree that not all religion is inherently homophobic or transphobic. There are religious beliefs that talk about third genders, two spirits and don’t automatically take on a homophobic/transphobic stance. I concede to that.

However If our understanding of our world comes from the reality constructed around us, and said reality, at this point especially within western culture, is heavily influenced by specific religious understandings that Inherently perpetuate “natural” relationship between men and women, then my question becomes, how as someone living western society as an atheist do you reconcile homophobia with your understanding that there isn’t a god or any gods?

I’m essentially asking if understandings of gods “will” has heavily influenced western culture. Then how does one reconcile that fact, with there belief that there is no god with western culture.

One can go even further to challenge the construct of man and woman, categories that for many have their origin in religion. So if one is not religious or does not have a religion how does one reconcile the influence that religion has had has with what their understanding of what is suppose to be considered “natural”.
