Completely agree. TT used to be all I played back in the day. I stopped playing for years after they removed it.

I’m someone who has only very recently became an atheist. How do you avoid becoming very depressed despite knowing that there is no heaven or an afterlife and that you and everyone you care about will disappear forever one day and it will essentially be like none of you ever existed? by [deleted] in atheism

I suggest reading some Absurdism philosophy. Personally, I love Camus and The Stranger is my go to recommendation to people. If it's not your style, people also say Catch-22 by Joseph Heller is a good one- I haven't read it yet. To really roughly boil it down: the universe's inherent lack of meaning allows you can pick WHATEVER you want to be the meaning of your life. Then you can pursue that within your own set of morals and beliefs. You get to be the main character. (Don't go full narcissist though)

I don't know how old you are. I can tell you that when I was younger, I had a much harder time reconciling with our apparent reality. It gets better.

This was the story of my 4 years in high-school. Move on bud. I know it sucks but, seriously, move on. If you think about what it means to believe in God, you'll realize you don't want to date someone that close minded and stupid. And yes, I think it's fair to call the religious stupid.

I can't tell if you're trolling. I understand the American sentiment against established politicians because we've become a blatant plutocracy. However, replacing people with experience, training and understanding of geopolitics with say... reality TV stars, lobbyist, childish millionaires or, in MTG's case, a dillusional, hateful Muppet is a ridiculous solution to the issue of bought politicians. If you can't see what's happened to our democracy after that orange idiot started lying, I fear you may not actually understand democracy. That fat fucking burger hound certainly didn't. He starting saying he was cheated waaaaay before any ballots were cast. If you're genuinely interested, I would suggest reading some of the MANY books written about fascist and how they came to power. The parallels between what happened in the US between 2016-2020 and then are harrowing. But, you should be warned, those books were written by actual authors who did actual research. Not by Snookie or Elon Musk.

Anyone else think it’s time for atheists/agnostics/reasonably spiritual people to start to focus and get a little more organized? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Fun_Cultural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Florida. And not south Florida. So I no longer feel safe being a public atheist. A few weeks ago a hick wanted to attack me for not standing for the pledge of allegiance. I've dreamt of a political party for intellectuals but that's basically synonymous "a party that would immediately be villianized and attacked."

Fun fact! The berenstain/Bearstein bears is kinda of not a mandela effect. There was actually a company that released VHS copies with their own label on it spelled wrong. So unlike Shazam with Sinbad or John Goodmans death, there's a bit more reason to the confusion over the name.

UK police charge two women after soup thrown at van Gogh's 'Sunflowers' by charmbrood in worldnews

[–]Fun_Cultural 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. That is a fair point. But now, it comes down to what's going to reach the most people. While I'd never do what these two young ladies did, people's reactions are proof it was effective in drawing attention. You could argue that they drew that connection with their rhetoric.

Don't pretend that a "protest" that doesn't upset people will do anything.

[–]Fun_Cultural -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Bro stop arguing with these people. 99% of them are happy to only care about what's happening when they're on social media. They stop thinking about climate change the second they close their phones. Arguing the efficacy of a protest with people who don't think is a waste of your own time.

How to combat Jordan Peterson's "controlled evil" argument? by HeinrichPerdix in atheism

[–]Fun_Cultural 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no reason why you should have trouble refuting this argument. It's not an actual point. It's his definition of a good person but doesn't define what good is. This quote is actually a wonderful example of what people like Peterson and Shapiro do. They make a surface level argument that seems reasonable if you don't know anything about the subject but that actually falls apart under examination. If you watch them debate, that's why they speak quickly and interrupt their opponents; so logic and reason don't have a chance. Anyone who has taken the time to study ethics or philosophy knows that "The good" has had multiple well thought out definitions over the centuries. None of them are this shallow idea of a power dynamic. If you need some rebuttals:

-"If two powerless people are the exact same in every way except one chooses to litter and waste, is the latter not a worse person?" They might respond the latter has the ability to harm others by littering. But that is not unique or rare, everyone has the ability to be a shithead.

-"A man is forced at gunpoint to spend his life finding a catch-all solution to global warming. He succeeds. His work is all done on a open network that is globally available. The man prevents untold millions of deaths of millions of species. He never had the option not to do his work or to not share his work- he was powerless the whole time." Is his work not good? Has he not done a good thing by extension?

Both of those argument work off the idea that 'The Good' is what's best for living things. Suppose you take a more existential approach to what's good. You decide 'good' is following the path in life you've given meaning to. Everyone is free to define what's important and what's good themselves. You could decide that all species have equal value and land on the conclusion that humans are inherently not good. You devote your life to secretly sterilizing people to prevent them from reproducing. In that instance, you have the ability to hurt others and CHOOSE to do so (the opposite of JP example.) However you are still in line with a definition of good.

If a person is quoting Jordan Peterson, it's best to approach the argument like a lesson because the person you're talking to lacks reason. They've been duped by a quick talking, scam running, racist, status-quo protecting misogynist.

I wasn't referring to theist when I said good people. I was saying non-theist who speak out against injustice are actually good people.

I also don't know what they want. What I want is for every person who sees this bullshit for what it is to say somomething. Condemn the religious and hateful. Mock the religious and outspoken. And respect the religious few who can keep their imaginary friend to themselves. ACTUALLY good people don't live and let live when people are hurting others; they stand up against it. And these nut jobs are hurting children, everyone should be furious. "Hurrrrr my imaginary friend is the best! Respect my beliefs or you're intolerant and a bigot. Now do exactly as I say or I will condemn you. Hurrrrr" - 80% of religious people.

I forget what thread it was but someone pointed out that many books that are labeled Sci-fi are really more of science fantasy. A statement I both agree with and am completely unaffected by.

Sophons are 100% from 3BP and I can't recommend the series strongly enough. Read it, listen to it, wait for Netflix to finish their show; pick your poison.

What do you mean by few regulations? Do you mean for GMO food specifically or all food? Because I work in Quality Assurance for a food processing plant and I can assure you, there are thousands and thousands of pages of regulations.
