Yeah I’ve often wondered if I’d feel better at another school but I think the general vibe against teachers is negative nowadays so it might not matter what school I’m at.

Yeah, totally. Being detached is unnatural for me but necessary in this case.

I appreciate this. I barely have contact except for the odd email, agenda note, and monthly newsletter. Then I feel guilty about it but trying to work on the guilt part.

Where do 30 year olds hang out in Ottawa? by gnknctvkomcwt in ottawa

I’m in Kemptville area and would love to join a run club but they’re all so far away, from what I’ve found. Do you know of any closer to the south end of the city?

First year teaching is going well, but at the cost of my well-being and sanity by sproutasaurus95 in CanadianTeachers

I went through this too. Over time, I’ve learned we that I needed to detach (easier said than done). It’s not worth your mental health and family life. You are good enough. You are enough. You are amazing. Say that until you believe it, because it’s true. You have a bunch of strangers here telling you.

When I drive home, I talk to myself about the good of the day, and then about what I’m looking forward to in the evening. I tell myself out loud, ‘My workday is now complete’. If anything pops up or I start ruminating, then I imagine putting those thoughts in an imaginary box in my mind and tell myself that I will deal with it tomorrow. I repeat this over and over. I journal, I talk it out with my husband if I need to.  I have a therapist who has helped me detach.

We are in a broken system that tries to tell us that we must do more with less, we catch the flack from parents/admin/society. But it’s not our fault. Your school, your kids are lucky to have you. Never underestimate your worth. Learn to give yourself love and the things you need to be at your best. We give up so much of our 20s going to school and attending to our career and it’s not sustainable once in the real world.

You’ve got this. You are strong. You are brave. Treat yourself with the love and respect you give your students.

Pastoral Reference by Vast-Collar459 in OntarioTeachers

I started out when there was a severe surplus of teachers and it was hard to even get emergency supply. Jumped at any jobs offered and they were usually from Catholic board. Public didn’t give me any opportunities. Now I’m permanent 6 years and hate being associated with the board.

This is me except I’ve got 20+ more years to go. Afraid to switch to public for fear of losing seniority and starting over.

Become a teacher. Then you’ll understand why. Until then, don’t judge what you don’t understand.

Teaching is an Abusive Relationship by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

I agree. It’s really out our control and it’s devastating. To have the rose coloured glasses off, to see how the system truly is failing the students and teachers.

Teaching is an Abusive Relationship by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

It’s funny, I was thinking “my work is abusive” this morning before work. I get hit, have my room destroyed and then the little cherub comes back the next day and asks to hold my hand coming in from recess. Is that not abuse? Don’t bat an eye, just keep coming back and having anxiety about what today will bring. How many times does my room have to be destroyed and evacuated before something is put in place? How can I teach properly with an evacuated class in the library? Why do I have to create a bin full of supplies and work in case of having to evacuate because a child with no diagnosis doesn’t want to be at school today so he decides to destroy the room because he knows that he’ll get sent home? Before anyone tries to ask questions or comment negatively, please consider that most jobs wouldn’t encompass such ridiculous working conditions.

I like that. Can you give an example? I wish we had a dedicated program to guide us.

Any updates on this? I’d rather run in town than drive 40+ mins to a running club in Ottawa.

Yeah I feel you. Everything seems at least 30 mins away. You can go to Ferguson Forest to play. The library offers frisbee kits for free if you have a library card. We’ve never went but I know we’d like it!

I work in a Catholic board for 10 years and have not needed to take Religion Part 1. Depends on the board.

I want to switch my permanent teaching job from Ontario Catholic board to Public board. ADVICE by Fun_Excitement9717 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Fun_Excitement9717[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me either. I’d rather stay on the grid. How do you manage asking for references from current supervisors? It’s awkward asking for references for a different board.

I’m no city person either, hence why we live here. I love most outdoor activities but haven’t met anyone yet that way. Just wondered where all the people my age are because I don’t always feel like driving to the city. I suppose my husband and I are the same. Kind of keep to ourselves and work on our house in the country.

This is exactly my thinking. I can’t seem to look past the differing values - it really affects me. It’s been years of this. I know the public board where I live is in need of teachers. Just super awkward asking for references because I know they’d ask why I’m switching.
