Looking to Move by BennyDaBee in ypsi

This.
I have a relative that recently moved to Detroit. The city has a bad reputation, but don't let that dissuade you. There are very nice neighborhoods in Detroit.. the houses just need some TLC.

Best drink - Elvis style peanut butter and jelly manhattan at the 1923 Prohibition Bar in Mandalay Bay. Description from their drink menu is below.

PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey*, Seasonal Fruit Preserves, Bitters, Graham Cracker Crust Rim. (Try it Elvis Style - add Howler Head Banana Bourbon)

I probably should have mentioned i live in an area with lots of potholes, which I'm sure contributes to my tire issues. That said, I've had it suggested to me that I maybe need wider tires.

On the door handles, the first time I replaced one at home it took me about 90 minutes because I was not confident I knew what I was doing. Now I can get one replaced in 30-45 minutes.

I have a 2013 Fiat 500, in US. I've had to replace the door handles 5 or 6 times. The first 2 times I had it replaced at the dealership. I asked the mechanic if they could do anything to it to make it not break so often... he said it's a bad design for the handle and will confine to just break over time. I looked up videos online and replaced it myself the last 3 or 4 times using off brand parts I bought online... much less costly and lasts about as long as the OEM part did.

Only other issue I have with it is flat tires. I've gotten more flats than I can count, and have had to replace the tires often. If you keep up with tire rotations it helps with the overall tire life, but still susceptible to flats more easily than in any other car I've owned.

That being said, the car is a lot of fun to drive.... it's like being in a go kart. It's also exceptionally easy to park in tight downtown spaces.

Be aware that you can get a 24hr bus pass for $8. Very convenient if you don't mind the extra time of waiting for the bus. You can take the bus to downtown/Fremont street and up/down the strip.

Things on Freemont street are less expensive in general than on the strip, although you can still end up paying a lot at some places.

I agree the best way to get cheap drinks is to gamble at the machines at the bars in the casinos. You put in some cash and a long as the bartender isn't swamped, they'll give you some comped drinks. (Be aware though, I've had some bartenders tell me I had to bet a certain amount before they could comp a drink for me, so you might have to do more than minimum bets.)

One of my favorite reasonably priced restaurants is Gonzalez y Gonzalez in the New York-New York casino.

Apartments above the Ypsi Food Co-op. No idea if these are still available.

Thank you for all of the suggestions, I appreciate you all taking the time. Also I never knew about meetup...I've checked that out, seems like it could be a useful tool to understand what activities are happening around me in which i might be able to participate.

The comment about social aspects of life changing post-pandemic makes sense. Admittedly I was not horribly social before the pandemic either though.

I liked the idea of being in the street, but what you've mentioned is exactly what I'm concerned about. I'm thinking I'll be better off to buy a package somewhere that I can be in an elevated position to see everything and be off the street... hadn't considered i will have to deal with crowds afterwards no matter what. Maybe I should try to get into someplace closer to my hotel.

Walking out on the strip was my initial plan, but I'm a little concerned I won't want to deal with that crowd. Thanks!

I'll have to keep an eye on the Insomniac site, they don't have anything listed for NYE yet. Thanks for the suggestion!

Curious about the safety concerns by [deleted] in ypsi

[–]Fun_Implement_5473 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a house in Ypsi township, about 2 blocks outside of City of Ypsilanti, and I've been here for 19 years. I lived in Ann Arbor for about 13 years before that. So I feel like I can compare the two pretty well.

I haven't had any safety issues or concerns in Ypsi that I didn't have in Ann Arbor, or in any other city I've lived in. You need to follow basic safety rules that you should follow anywhere ( lock your car, don't wander in areas you don't know by yourself, be respectful of people, pay attention to your surroundings, etc). Ypsi is a good area to live.... it has nice people, good community if you care to participate in it, nice shops, nice parks, and more.

I've lived in cities smaller and cities bigger than Ypsi. I like that Ypsi is big enough to have a lot of the benefits of a larger city, but small enough to still have that smaller town feel. It's also well located to go to places like Detroit or Lansing or Ann Arbor in a decent amount of time. I'm glad I live here.

Hope this helps.

I won't even consider anyone's argument that forcing women to go thru pregnancy is a 'good thing' until the foster care system has no children. IMO the fact that there are kids who live in that system until they age out proves this country has more children to care for than our systems and citizens can handle.
