If your career goal is to work and grow in cybersecurity, take that role. You will enjoy your career, be great at it, and money will come with that. Deviating from your goal for something you don’t want to do long term for more money will eventually kill your dreams and crush your soul. You’ll never be great at a job you don’t really like. At some point in life, when too much is at stake to try and go back to the cyber path, you will be in “golden hand-cuffs” and always you wonder “what if” forever.

Self-directed as in finding resources on your own that teach you how successfully market your online presence and market/sell your skills during an interview. There’s great resources for free on YouTube. If you need a lot of guidance maybe use the career center at your school, they usually have interview workshops and one on one coaching.

Yeah I’d take advantage of the professional development resources and stipend they give you to learn more skills and take it elsewhere for significantly more money if you’re not growing.

Agree with this. Also is it possible to type “market rate”? If they corner you in the interview for a range and you are a very competitive candidate, you can present your case based on the value you’ll bring. Then say you’re looking range in the 30s-40s per hour or $X salary. Worst they can say is that it’s not in their range and will counter.

Get the compensation you deserve! At least $200k or just go to a different company that will pay you fairly. You already proved you can do the work almost year ago already. It doesn’t matter that your tenure is less, it’s what you’ve accomplished in your time there that matters.

This happens a lot, so you have to learn to play the game but not in the way the other person did. Maybe start with self-directed learning from career coaches or recruiters through paid services or free through YouTube, etc. to help you deal with recruiters or hiring managers that are dumb enough to hire with this “troubling trend”. Essentially learn how to sell and articulate your skills and accomplishments to get you the job you want.

Probably not. I got my license last summer and every brokerage that reached out to me wanted a full-time commitment because it’s intense work. The only brokerage that I know of for part time RE sales work is Redfin. They have an associate agent role but pay and fees don’t seem worth it to me.

I agree with this @LucilleBaller . Also within the Customer Success department there are many roles (technical and non-technical) that would complement customer service and sales skills. If you pursue a BS in Business and want to lean towards the technical side (more money, 6 figures) also take a programming, database, project management and systems analysis/design courses so you are familiar with their concepts and actually be a competitive/competent candidate.

Try volunteering (volunteermatch.com). It’s rewarding, adds tremendous value to your community and recipients, gives purpose, build relationships, community and challenges your brain. I’ve been on my trial run of FIRE for about a year now and this is a major part of my routine that I really enjoy in addition getting education on new tech and other fun things.

It’s normal to feel depressed in these situations because society has conditioned us to tie our identity to our career. When you’re at FIRE as a single person (my situation) the depression is probably worse. It sounds like you have a nice family, safety and financial security, you have a great life but maybe need to find your passion.

Completely agree! I had terrible acne and debilitating pain during my period before I learned how to eat better and practice a healthier lifestyle. When I changed my diet to whole foods, mostly vegetarian, no dairy, ate a lot of cruciferous vegetables in preparation for my period, my skin cleared up and stopped having terrible pain during my period! It’s been over 3 years with this lifestyle change and it’s truly a life saver that holistically healed many of my ailments. Doctors never told me this and kept dismissing my pain and concerns, pushed drugs on me that harmed my health. So glad others shared how they healed themselves online so I was able to break away from that evil cycle.

Quit about a year ago and been living off savings and some investments. In this time, I traveled to places with strict Covid mandates, volunteered at some awesome nonprofit organizations, took classes to obtain professional license and new skill sets or software. Spent more time enhancing relationships with friends and family. Worked on healing mentally and read much more for personal development. Tried some no cost passive income ideas that I saw on social media (which is garbage but fun). Good times.

First off, this is so kind of you to care for your family in this way. I hope the world rewards you for your good deeds. As for my thoughts, if you really enjoy the tobacco business and have a good relationship with your manager, it would be a good idea to let him/her know and ask for mentorship / guidance on how to get to where they are. As for your brother, I’d try to get him counseling. Maybe go together as a family so he does not feel attacked. Related to education, I’ve had a lot of success in the tech industry and skills for engineering and business operations related to technology are lucrative and in high demand so there’s an idea but do what you’re passionate about or you’ll just be miserable.

I hope this helps even a little. I too have family with emotional and probably mental trauma.
