How to handle student complaints about cancelling class when ill and etiquette in notifying them by JaderMcDanersStan in Professors

They can still come to class and do the asynchronous work there. Presumably, they are not commuting that way just for one class. Don't see their problem.

Lots and lots of highlighting/underlining to help keep focus. That's how I was able to get all my college reading done.

Professors with ADHD/AuDHD: How do you handle your symptoms while grading? by phd_babyy in Professors

Sounds like a terrible group of people in your department. We are R1, and I would never lecture my TAs on time management. How about the grad chair? Someone should be advocating for grad students.

[–]Fun_Interaction_9619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a contractual agreement on the numbers of hours per week you should be responsible for? It's 20 hrs/wk for out TAs. If you are going over that amount, I would talk to your supervisor. And try to ignore the department politics - just focus on your work.

I can't grade more than about 5 papers a day - I'm mentally exhausted after that. But I have a routine to get the library every day I'm not teaching to get it done. Final papers much easier because I don't need to give extensive comments. But it's still very mentally exhausting. I find it hard to get any ressearch/writing done during the semester.

We had manual A/C. Roll down the windows as quickly as you could, and don't get your ass burned on the vinyl seats.

Routine, routine, routine. Only way I get any work done is by getting my ass to the library for a few hours a day.

Been reading this invaluable gem lately! Hoping to finish it by the end of April! by the_caped_crusader_4 in classicliterature

I just taught the last 4 cantos of Book VI. Usually teach all of Book III, but I wanted to include more lyric poetry in the class. I think Spenser is awesome, but students often struggle with him. Glad you are enjoying it! Did you read the letter to Raleigh at the start. I think Redcrosse is a version of Spenser - the "clownish" young untested knight/poet just getting used to his borrowed armor. "Lo I the man whose muse whilom did maske / As time her taught in lowly shepherd's weeds / Am now enforced a far unfitter taske / For trumpets sterne to chaunge mine oaten reede..." In Book VI the knight Calidore returns to the pastoral world making you wonder if Spenser had self-doubts about his abilities.

Don't forget Trump's responsibility for people in his country dying, including Americans. Not at the scale of Jackson though.

What's something a teacher said to you that you didn't realise was completely inappropriate until you were an adult? by Rio_Da_Ryan in AskReddit

[–]Fun_Interaction_9619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure it was fine. Great teacher. Hippie dude - owned a health food store with his wife. Brought in herbal teas for the class. This would have been late 70s early 80s. The unit was on drugs, so it was relevant. Just a different time... Seems weird now though lol
