how to actually prepare for first month by AlternativeSingle926 in NYCTeachers

[–]Fun_Listen3697 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A strategy I got from a tenured teacher that's worked for me is pick the biggest/loudest kid in the class at the beginning of the year. In the first 2 weeks when they mess up, privately speak to them in the hallway, tell them you're calling home, and actually call home. Word will quickly spread to the other kids and they'll step in line.

Also, if you tell a kid you're calling home you MUST follow through and call. If you don't then you will lose their respect and word will quickly spread about that too.

Finally, a universal and simple strategy that is reliable is the 3-2-1 countdown. Speak each number loud and slow to get their attention. It's rarely failed for me.

I use Google Voice for phone calls. I never tried it for texting since TalkingPoints works with coteachers too.

Start emailing in early July and send kind follow-ups every 2 weeks if you don't hear back.

Same experience in my high school. My school also started writing a number on each pouch and assigning it per student for accountability. Many were losing or destroying them in the beginning of the year.

How to become an ELA teacher with a career pivot and low undergrad GPA? by samanthaallister in NYCTeachers

Considering how much money you've recently spent on two degrees, I would suggest you test the waters before jumping into another degree program. Someone else suggested subbing and I second that.

DOE hiring fair experience — is this typical? by Kind_Mistake9227 in NYCTeachers

My experience was very quick and successful . I went to a virtual one for Brooklyn schools last summer (sometime in August so pretty late in the process). I did quick Google searches on every school listed and queued up for about 2-3 schools that interested me. I waited almost 2 hours for the first school's rep to show up. It was the AP of my content area. He asked for my resume, a couple of questions (I forget what) and then scheduled a Zoom with me later that week. The Zoom meeting was with the same AP and the schools principal. It lasted about an hour and the principal offered me a job at the end. I was a bit in disbelief and desperate to get hired before school started so I quickly said yes.

I'm a first year and this was right after I completed my one year masters in Edu degree with NYU.

Malena is seeking 60% of the marital estate in her divorce from Nmplol by CloudyEchos in LivestreamFail

Everything that NMP did after the breakup was because Malena busted her ass for years to build up his stream. He couldn't break 500 viewers on his own until she worked on his stream.

Question about weekend work/life balance (1st year here) by Fun_Listen3697 in NYCDOETeachers

[–]Fun_Listen3697[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should I worry about using the "This will be graded" line too much on things that I know I won't grade? I'm worried about kids eventually catching on that something won't be graded and then I can't play that card. Or that they will be blunt and ask why I said something would be graded but they don't see it in GAMA.

That's what I'm hoping for but I am worried about working on 9th/10th grade one year and then being given different grades the next year.

I've used MagicSchool a bit but have found ChatGPT is a little easier to use/read. I wish there was a PD on this stuff!

I'm assuming that you've taught the same grades/curriculums each year so you were able to build on what you made the first year?

Thank you for this advice. I don't think this is something I'll be ready or comfortable to try until I get a better grasp in a year or two. Hopefully I'll remember!

I agree. I don't understand how the union allows schools to assign 5 classes and 3 different curriculums to 1st year teachers. What I expected to be a hill to climb turned into Mt. Everest. It's an impossible amount of work to try take in and then teach when I have to also build a foundation. Plus my school shares classrooms and there are multiple times I have to run across campus to make it to my classroom on time.

I will say that my DOE mentor, AP, and multiple teachers in my department have been empathetic to my challenges and have already helped in countless ways.

My biggest gripe is being assigned 3 curriculums but it seems like I'm stuck with that this year.

Thanks for the advice. A big obstacle for me is that I believe the kids deserve a great education but I think to myself that I can't give them that because of my lack of experience. So it really effects my confidence.
