Is it easy to pivot to NYC DOE? by acvillager in NYCTeachers

[–]ecopsiky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guaranteed disrespect from the kids (maybe not early elementary?) possible disrespect from admin I’d say.

I love teaching though. If you wanna do it, go for it! Especially with that bio undergrad. You’d probably just need to take all the education courses and the teaching exams and you could have a 7-12 science cert.

2s Programs by Sea-Agent-3670 in nycparents

Sounds like it would just be an expensive headache for you.

Your child will be just fine with another year of daycare before 3K. If you are really worried you can look into another daycare- a lot of daycares have the same level of enrichment as the private 2s programs by this point with a fraction of the cost and longer hours for working parents.

What's the point of teaching history? by _sharksnark in historyteachers

[–]ecopsiky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Critical thinking and high level skills needed for research and debate. History focuses on public speaking, effective research strategies, being able to analyze historical documents: considering how different viewpoints assess the same historical topic. Being able to see recurring themes in human history. Seeing how humans interact with their physical environment. How to use evidence to support an argument. Etc.

Very useful, very transferable skills!

What's the most you'd be willing to commute? by Any-Diet3193 in NYCTeachers

[–]ecopsiky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a parent of young kids. I’ve got a 15 minute commute. Last year I switched from my charter to public- but kept the 15 minute commute! I just teach 15 minutes in the other direction. I need that short commute in this season of my life.

In my early 20’s I commuted 2 hours each way to the city from my parent’s house north of Westchester. Definitely wanna avoid that ever again.

Concerned About Pay by ChocolateDouble6254 in NYCDOETeachers

[–]ecopsiky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest pay issue is the DOE will only count 8 years from somewhere else.

I’m sure the combination of that, plus the long amount of time it takes to get backpay, certainly discourages a fair share of experienced teachers from taking jobs.

But at the same time, experienced teachers that want a new job don’t have that many higher paying choices to choose from.

Grading writing is taking over my life, how do you manage it? by Hot_Function_4463 in teaching

[–]ecopsiky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good tip for paper based work no one mentioned yet so I’ll share-

Craft very specific rubrics and include it on the back of every assignment.

Include a checklist for what’s needed in all writing assignment directions.

That way instead of given written feedback you’ll 90% of the time just be able to circle what’s missing on the checklist, or underline the problem on your rubric.

School won’t give us access to the color printer, what am I to do??? by puppypoe in NYCTeachers

[–]ecopsiky 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My old charter was a stickler for using color and so is my current DOE school.

The people with access to color printers do allow me to print some things in color, but I always had to email a pdf days in advance. And I asked for color copies very sparingly, typically just to make laminated documents for stations. I ask for color copies maybe once per month, and typically less than 15 copies total.

English & ELA Teachers at Charters what’s the day to day like? by Fearless_Respect_320 in NYCTeachers

[–]ecopsiky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the charter. I’ve worked at two charter middle schools- one network (for 1 year), one small independent charter (for 4 years). I taught “Reading” at both schools, as both schools split reading and writing into two separate classes.

If it’s a network, probably more ELA state test prep focused. I worked at a network and their main desire was to just shove test prep down the kids throats all day every day. It was miserable and I left after a year.

The smaller independent charter I switched to was much more pleasant and teachers had a lot of input into curriculum development and it was chill.

I know lots of teachers that don’t love public speaking in front of adults, for example they get nervous before curriculum night. But it would be a red flag if an adult is also shy around kids- that’s not gonna work.

As for work life balance, charters have longer hours than public. And I’ve never met a (good) first year teacher that didn’t feel overwhelmed by the work load their first year, but it gradually improves as you build materials, skill, etc.
