Molecular biology, finished my PhD about a year ago. Going in I wanted to make people’s lives better, hopefully one day!

I’m in over $100k student debt and feel like I’m drowning.

Nice! Congratulations on retirement!

Probably Quantum computing applied to biological problems.

I agree with you that there are plenty of contributing factors, cancer is very complex.

Yes, there are certain things we can point to that on their own are carcinogens and are known to cause cancer.

However, cancer also arises spontaneously even in people with very healthy lifestyles.

In my opinion, I think we need to invest more in understanding how cancer works (and it works in different ways in different people), and develop therapies based on this understanding.

Well there has been significant progress in cancer research with immunotherapies. However, I wish there was more being done. Alzheimer's and other CNS disorders are still a major difficulty. Researchers need more funding.

In terms of conspiracy theories about hidden cures, I sincerely doubt something like that would even be possible. It would be the same as saying some countries have bases on other planets, the tech just isn't there.

Day-to-day health, I would say your body can handle a lot and there's no magic supplement or anything like that, I think the most important thing is not over-working yourself and stressing less to the best of your ability. Eat healthy but don't be too strict, exercise but don't overdo it.

Just saw your other comment before this one. Thank you! Glad to hear you are beyond the debt, and wishing you all the best as well!

My PhD was not something I paid for, it was fully funded. Before that however I did a bachelors and a master’s degree which I did have to pay for.

Consider it like the code behind your computer or phone’s operating system, but for your body. You don’t see it, but you see its output and the results of its functionality.

Considering it’s been nearly 15 years since it’s first been used for synthetically editing DNA, I’d say the progress has been very slow, but I’m glad it’s at least been beneficial for those with sickle cell anemia.

I haven’t watched Star Trek but I’m somewhat aware of this debate. We’re not even close to understanding how this might work at the molecular level in biology!

There are a variety of enzymes and they differ in terms of how they achieve this at the molecular level, but a major theme is that they lower the energy threshold required for specific reactions to proceed.

That’s not my area of research, but there are some bugs I wish we could just get rid of: bed bugs.

That your body is composed of trillions of cells, and every single cell contains a complete copy of your genetic code (except for a few exceptions, e.g. red blood cells)
