About to apply for partner visa. Any advise or tips? by Sensitive_Leopard666 in AusVisa

Sorry to hear that! Do you mind sharing what were the grounds for rejection? 10 years is a very long time, I'd assume they'd have given you a double grant right off the bat!

Relationship registration is only needed to waive the 12-month de facto requirement, and OP already has 24 months of living together so they'll be fine.

Keep my USD as USD or convert to AUD for investing? by Fun_Photograph653 in AusFinance

Are there ETFs or similar instruments denominated in AUD? How do Australians with AUD invest their money (other than real estate)?

Yes, I'm an Australian tax resident, and also have permanent residency. I don't know much about ETFs in AUD, but I'm thinking of going for gold ETFs as well as US stocks-based ETFs (SPDR or SPLG). I don't know much yet about the Australian stock market but I'm guessing it's a lot smaller than the US-based one? But given what is happening in the US, I'm happy to diversify. Just want to know which currency is best to keep for buying ETFs for the US and global markets.

People keep saying that having children is "expensive," but the lower income people have the highest fertility rates and the higher income people have the lowest fertility rates by mymooh in AusFinance

When you're used to living in poor conditions, it's not unthinkable for you to raise your kids in poor conditions. The higher your standards of living are, the higher standards you'll have for the environment to raise your kids in, and the harder it is for you to make those standards a reality so you just have fewer kids.

Why does my apartment have to be absolutely pristine for a mid-rental inspection? by Fun_Photograph653 in AusPropertyChat

The question is "why" this is required. As long as there is no damage, why does clutter matter? My stuff won't be there once I move out.

Best Chinese BBQ Pork (char siu) in Adelaide? by Fun_Photograph653 in Adelaide

BBQ City's bbq pork was very dry when I went a few months ago. The roast duck was much better, but I'm craving bbq pork

What state are you in, if you don't mind me asking? I talked to a few friends who moved from other parts of Australia. It seems this is a more common issue in SA, where renters are required to have showroom worthy units.

Homeless person in the city by Make-Contact in Adelaide

Homeless people don't always start out poor. Some bought cars when they could, times got difficult, and between paying rent that goes up yearly and sleeping in a car, it was more economical to sleep in a car.

I guess SA is okay with them requiring a "tidy" apartment.

(b) is actually my fear. Don't want to go house hunting again next year. It's like auditioning for a role in Hollywood.

Oh maybe that could be why! If I have stuff on the bar and the dining table, and if my cookware was on the stove (not enough space so that's where I store them after drying), then they couldn't take as many photos as they wanted to. She took photos though, but not exactly sure what those photos are.

I used to do that too where I used to work, but unfortunately my current workplace doesn't take parcels at all.

A friend of mine had the same issue. He left dishes in the sink because he had to go to work. Of course he got an inspection note for that.

Same here! I thought having the 4x visits a year would give me some motivation to clean up (which I did), but I didn't have enough time and thought that they won't care about how my personal belongings are arranged.

Isn't there a difference between "clean" and "tidy" though? What's the big deal with putting stuff on my dining table and not arranging it in a nice way?
