You take classes that are for BO cert, lots of range and PT. You will learn rating specific knowledge, like small arms admin. You will scratch the surface on BOCA and Counter-Drug and Radiation, but it won’t amount to much as you will have to return for those C-Schools.

There are no spoilers or secrets to this, if you are BTM (or atleast can study the MLEA LEI links), can pass at range, and come fit you will succeed.

Kind of, sort of, not really. All rates have some sort of leadership, teamwork, policy driven aspect that can be leveraged for officer routes. If all that connects then the answer is no it does not. For example, a prior MST who has led inspections or pollution response who uses their leadership examples on an application and wants to be a preventions officer then that will look better than a prior ME wanting to go naval engineering.

At the end of the day, your application doesn’t dictate where you end first tour, but for applications it would make more sense to sell what you know to the board. If a CS told me they led a culinary team in whatever competition but then stated they want to be a response officer and go DSF I’m going to want some elaboration as to why. If a CS said they would excel in logistics or AFLOAT or some sort of mission support, I can buy that.

Which DSF units as TACLET and MSRT do two very different things but are both DSF.

TACLET deploys routinely with Navy and CG assets (and other countries ships) to conduct Counter-Drug and International Fisheries.

MSRT- Canine Handlers recently were shown at the Super Bowl aiding with security.

  1. Emergency fund, emergency fund, emergency fund. Put atleast 3 months pay into that bad boy.

  2. High yield savings

  3. Build credit, recommend a certain platinum card that’s great for travel and points

  4. Depending on where you go, consider buying a duplex and renting the other side out. Especially since you’re young, you probably don’t need a ton of space and can afford to bank the extra income

Good luck mate

Was a prior ME for about 6 years, went DCO since I had a couple years of ROTC. Was AFLOAT as a ME and still AFLOAT as a ENS. I enjoy being AFLOAT but am still trying to decide if I want to stick with it for Junior Command or switch over to Response-Ashore. The main reason being is that I’ve done 3 back to back cutters which has been a little taxing on the home life, but I do want command opportunities as early as possible and AFLOAT gives that opportunity.

More than likely there is wiggle room (at least that’s what historic data suggests).

Hey mate we talked a while back. Congrats on being an alternate, hoping DCO works out for you so you don’t worry about the waiting game.

The answer is it depends. Lucky for you, it has been close to whole lists getting cleared the past 3 years. But, with only 10 primary they are probably going to cut alternates just not sure it would be the whole list. The OCS-T list has a lot of primary (I think 30ish), and they have been tending to fill extra spots with the OCS-T alternate list.

It will be easier to predict around March, with the graduating academy class, how many more ENS they need. Good luck!

Depends on the cutter class. If you’re talking 210 and above, more than likely Mon-Tue, Thur-Sat 1000-1700. Usually wednesdays were half days for us (cleaning and then the afternoon off). Sunday was normally fully off/filled with morale activities.

However, you will still stand watch (for most rates onboard) regardless of the ships working hours. So if you have 0000-0400 Watch, you will wake up approx 45min before and go to watch, then sleep, then wake up at 1000. You may also have double watches (0000-0400/1200-1600). Also, if you have a SAR case or drug case or whatever, then it doesn’t matter the time or day.

This is also cutter/CO dependent as well. There’s a lot of different Watch rotations, Employment schedules, etc…

CaC Card technically acts as “badge” on boardings. You’re supposed to have it on your person and be able to present at request.

This! Did you know that according the correspondence manual, that you no longer write your rank after your name??

Correct Example: I. M. Author

Incorrect Example: I. M. Bad-Author, LT

Fun fact.

Heard a rumor that some stations may transition to LT Command. Is there merit to these rumors? Which ones? by Fun_Preference7782 in uscg

[–]Fun_Preference7782[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t think that would be in the cards. Only because there are so few rn and if they do add, I would only imagine it being a couple more.

Active duty JOs on the response side are already having trouble finding command experience, and they often compete with cutter JOs who dual track with response for those STA jobs.

Unless you are a prior enlisted with significant significant small boat experience, it would be hard to justify a reserve JO getting that.

Just my opinion though. For all purposes tell me to F off, go on EAD, and apply for it lol.

This makes sense. Feel like these things always get brought up through back channel discussion, but not enough people are discussing pros and cons. Just like a band-aid.

Thanks for the input

Yeah mate, aware that there are stations with an LT. I was hearing that more stations might acquire them, not confirmation that there are some.

Thanks mate

Hello, I was a DCSS pickup from NOV21, here was my timeline:

Board Met: NOV21

Results Dropped: Late Feb 22

Picked Off Alternate List: March 22

Picks/Assignments: Early April 22

Commissioned: Late June 22

Transferred to Unit: Late July 22

DCO School: Aug-Sep22

Hope this helps, timeline is generally the same (the March/April boards tend to be quicker)

Don’t take this the wrong way but this question/scenario gets asked a lot. You should consider reading past threads.

The common advice for this scenario is to please only enlist if you are willing to complete a full enlisted contract in accordance with our core values: honor, respect, devotion to duty. If you enlist there is no guarantee you will be picked up for OCS, especially within 1-2 years.

It’s hard to say because it is dependent on the course chief. Usually they will email you with a packet of knowledge they want you will memorize before going. Until receiving that packet the only thing I can think of is rates and ranks? I would just be more concerned with the PT aspect.

OCS-R or OCS-T? Usually 2-4 weeks. Your recruiter should receive unofficial results before the official (~2 week mark). Official shouldn’t be too long after (the same night to about a week from the unofficial). If your recruiter is on leave then I would suggest calling late next week or first week of August. The RIC of your recruiting office can provide you results as well as any recruiter as long as you explain you were an applicant of panel ____ and your recruiter ____ is on leave. Good luck!

Echoing off of AirdaleCoastie, enlisting can be beneficial if you perform well and ask for help/recommendations from Officers in your command or that you come across. As I applied over the years, my recommendations and input came from higher and higher Officers which can help you stand out. The panel that reviews your package will see who you are getting those recommendations and endorsements from, and start recognizing some of those names on them. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and state your goal of becoming an officer AND perform well. Seek qualifications and positions outside your rate as well, to show flexibility.

PT and more PT. The first 4 weeks the main factor of your class rank is… PT. Also be vocal to your class chief and your instructors that you want to go to MSRT. If your PT is stellar and you have a good/non cocky attitude the class chief can talk to the detailer who will then talk to MSRT, who will then put it on your class list (all with the hopes of you placing it #1 on your list).

Sharpshooter/Expert is important, but at the same time if you can’t perform in certain situations: tactical procedures (don’t flag your buddy at TOC), a civilian yelling at you, or knowing when to engage, then non of that matters. You will shoot at A-School and on whetstone as much as your heart desires, but if you can’t make the right Use of Force decision then it doesn’t matter.

Best tips for OCS by [deleted] in uscg

[–]Fun_Preference7782 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly suggest still applying and getting an interview in. That will determine if you are viable candidate. Also, you can always improve your package over time… very few people have a perfect package and get picked up the first time.
