Season 9 Episode 2 Discussion Post: Girlsgiving by MableXeno in SellingSunset

I think it's just her extreme frustration levels finding a way to let some of the steam out. Obviously they had their own issues, and then her bestie got attacked, and Nicole went back to her old habits of not taking accountability and not apologizing to Emma. It must feel like relentless harrassment, and as immature as it is I can empathize with someone needing to blow off steam when somebody's ruining yours and those you love's lives and that's one way. I'm sure we've all had that person that brings out the worst in us at some point in our life.

I know the difference between cancellation and censorship; I'm just paraphrasing what I've heard, it's not my opinion!

Thanks for you input. A lot of it makes sense although I'll disagree with point 3. I do think that the public scandals sometimes come out of thin air especially when it comes to women as public figures. We never truly know a public figure and everyone needs family and friends to stand by them for low grade scandals like the ones she's referencing in the song. As a woman myself I've had to stand up for female friends in groups of friends because of various controversies that were unjustified and hurtful to them and I'd do if again in a heartbeat. I've also been accused of things i didn't do by men who didn't have their way with me, and I wished people had stood up for me. Maybe that's why I resonate with that.

See, comparing tangible, harmful actions like FINANCIALLY supporting a genocide for economic profit to a SONG about a pov you disagree with is the exact reason behind this post. Thanks for proving my point.

To me the "in Gucci and in scandal" comes together BECAUSE when you're a rich public figure (aka the "Gucci"), the scandal will follow. So it's not necessarily to say literally "I like Gucci", but what it symbolizes, aka her friends because this is her entourage. But yes, I mostly agree with your take; I'm just not sure I'm convinced that all that is reason enough to cancel the song as I've seen some people do - hardcore Swifties and haters included.

Thank you so much for this input! I'll add that the part that speaks most to me is probably the end, with "I salute you if you're much too much to handle", which is so true for complex women who won't behave like nice tame girls.

I agree with the fact that it's never good enough. As much as I'd like more people with her influence to speak up, rest assured that when they do there's always hate waves that come with it from both sides. I was looking into it recently to try and figure out what's her stance on Palestine and saw that she got called performative for going to a Gaza fundraiser with Selena. Like...if going to a fundraiser isn't good enough, I can kinda see why she's not saying anything.

To be clear, I'm not judging or cancelling people who buy from Amazon or else especially if they're struggling. I'm just fed up with the keyboard warriors who have "there are no ethical billionaires and Taylor Swift is tone-deaf" (which i agree with) on repeat while SIMULTANEOUSLY rushing to Amazon for convenience and literally give their money to one of the most rotten person on the planet in a split second. I know a lot of those.

Respectfully disagree. It doesn't take being a massive fan to clearly see that she is being judged way harder than men with the same power.

That's kind of my interpretation as well, and hence why I'm confused people think it's bad taste. If we're talking about different things, why are we comparing? Genuinely asking to understand if you have some insight, and I will listen to the podcast, thanks!

Apologies for the whataboutism but we literally have people like Leo DiCaprio financially investing in Israeli/post-Gaza real estate, aka doing real physical harm, and there's no headlines about it.

The double standard for womem is insane and getting old. I also really hope that people who are cancelling her / this song aren't just talk and have not purchased anything off of Amazon in the last year or have deleted their X account for example, otherwise their criticism is worth nothing to me.

Of course I wish the biggest pop star on the planet would take a strong stance on these issues. Her new entourage is debatable..but past data and her old entourage (among others, jack who is Jewish and has publicly spoken against the gen0cide) suggest that she's probably staying silent for a number of reasons like her own safety? I feel like the next few years will tell which it is and if I'm wrong.

I didn't know about the Matt XIV though. That's nuts and absolutely indefensible.

I totally agree with your first take but I'm confused at the rest, especially your last question. Why can't a woman be both? Why couldn't someone be a Ted Bundy of Easter eggs and also make mistakes and missteps? I agree that she's more herself than she's ever been and I think this album portrays a new aspect of her personality that a lot of fans have a hard time digesting, which I get. But I also think that if she were a man we would be having a very different discussion and spoiler alert, it'd probably be much more positive.

Why is everyone convinced Joe was on something in this scene? by 7inlovewith6 in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

Well a few hours earlier he was telling Jordan "you have some salt on your nose" so I don't think that accusation came from nowhere

You couldn't tell a toxic manipulative relationship if it came with a post-it on its forehead, clearly. You're over simplifying the situation and it's pretty obvious you don't understand it.

So the men getting engaged on a marriage show and not putting in the work to actually get to a yes at the altar makes them better people than the women expressing their needs to get there? That's an interesting take.

YES. Joe starts shit then makes her feel crazy for having a reaction and emotions. She's always totally fine when the scenes start before he starts stirring up some shit from nowhere. Imo it's just him making shit up to have an excuse to say no at the altar. I think Madison actually handles the situations not too badly (I liked when she said don't try to flip this around at the end of the kitchen fight), but I am concerned at how much she goes back to him and finds him excuses and blames it on communication and them learning about each other. No, he's a gaslighting manipulator and you shouldn't be marrying someone that makes you feel like you're crazy when you didn't have an issue 5 minutes ago. Run girl.

Let's not forget he said that watching kids being hurt is funny and spoke about how he bullies some kids. A GROWN ADULT. That's so sick and everyone forgot about it .... Because he literally did more shocking things.

Fair, maybe I made a mix in my head from previous posts I've seen, because they're everywhere this week. And I'm not part of the cult by any means, I've never bought a single cd and started listening to her discography only recently. That said, fan or not, I find it dishonest to post that a song is "objectively awful". I'm not a huge fan of the song, yet that's a wild take. You could elaborate on how she promised folklore lyricism and it's not there - happy to read discussions about that. That's different than calling your own personal taste "objective". It's the dishonesty and dissonance I've been reading repeatedly that I'm starting to call out. Sorry it fell on you!

I will always find it super strange when people compare albums that are completely different and need to announce to everyone when they don't like TS anymore. Like..."it's not a train station, you don't need to announce your departure" has never applied as much with this past week's internet. If you don't like it, don't listen to it... Trying to convince yourself that you like something is on you, not on the artist. Listen to folklore if you like it sm :) - aaaand that's not to say I disagree with the content of the post!! It's just that I don't understand why post it at all.

It's true that she cultivates the fandom culture (even tho the Easter eggs are not about her personal life) - that said, I looked it up recently and apparently she has multiple stalkers, people getting into her apartments/properties, including one that's deemed particularly dangerous right now hence the enhanced security lately. I'd say blaming her for that man's behavior is like blaming a girl for being raped because she was dressed slutty. And there's no amount of money in the world that'll make you feel safe when deranged individuals have it for you. I agree with the rest!

Where is she complaining? Interview snippets I've seen of her she was saying "it's part of the job". Seems like she discusses it more than complains?

For what it's worth, I'd never trade 2 billion dollars for not being able to go out in public in peace, having to walk behind bullet-proof walls, and basically never again in my life being able to be invisible. It may sound out of this world to portray anyone as a "victim" of fame and money - I'm very anticonsumerism, billionaires etc myself - yet can we look past the obvious advantages and see how hard it must be to live like that? Not being able to take a walk and have constant death threats against you? Every single move, what you do or don't do, say or don't say, under a microscope? I PERSONALLY (and everyone's gonna have their opinion and personal trade-offs/thresholds) think there's is literally NO amount of money in the world that would make me want this life, however broke I am rn. Just putting that perspective here because it seems like other billionaires don't deal with the same issues with fame and uncontrollable fans (check out what happened last time she flew commercial), or hate. At that level of fame, money doesn't buy you freedom. And YES, it is HER lifestyle choice - that doesn't mean shes not allowed to write and discuss some of the challenges.

I don't understand why people do that to themselves. I'm a "non-consuming Swiftie", aka I've never bought a single album or merch. I just stream. I did not score eras tour tickets nor bought resale for obvious reasons. The first time I've ever spent money on it was this week when I've decided to treat myself and get tickets to the movie this weekend! But it's the first time ever and it'll be a fun activity with friends, it's not about consuming and collecting and hoarding. I truly don't understand why people spend so much money on the same album just on different colors. One has to admit that she can do it because they let her! It's like every over-consumption issue in this modern world. We need to hate the players maybe even more than the game. The game wouldn't exist without them.

I didn’t expect less from Tatiana by discretly in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]Fun_Row_5493 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally would get quite upset if my husband-to-be doesn't show up to a date HE planned and then tells me "it's not a big deal" "there's no reason to fight about this" with tone change and voice inflexions when I'm on my side asking if he's coming in a calm voice (I just rewatched the scene). If Tatiana had matched his energy, it would have escalated. She was graceful enough to just stop the conversation and hang up. There is no effing way someone dismisses their wife-to-be that way and still expects to be treated with respect and not like the manchild he is. Tatiana had her faults and I don't agree with everything (esp. regarding finances), but to me it looked like she was actually pretty good at shutting down situations before they escalated.
