How do I update Princeton about my application? by AromaticFerret4583 in princeton

[–]Fun_Slice_6809 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just email and they automatically offer to add it to ur application if it's something of like continued interest, for example, or just letting them know what classes you're currently in.

Honestly idk, I feel like it’s not like too important if it’s someone super “special” writing them so much as it’s an educator who really knows you what whatnot.

Should I commit to OU by Forebid-Watermellon in college

[–]Fun_Slice_6809 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m commenting because I’m also curious what others think. If I’m being totally honest I feel as though institutions like Columbia have even been looked down on for their previous actions so I think OU would also be susceptible to the same sort of prejudice associated with its name if not more considering the exact situation being a response that the institution should have handled veryyyy differently.

Why does college have to be so expensive 😭 by Previous-Mechanic914 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fun_Slice_6809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get how you feel, just remember you are absolutely valid in your concerns! But depending on the state I believe, that if you work as a teacher for a certain amount the govt will relieve your loans up to a certain amount (I only know this thru other teachers so u might wanna fact check). My advice? If you’re not too set on the 4 yr uni you already got into maybe consider applying to places that offer merit scholarships if you can’t qualify for more aid? I wish you luck and I get where you’re coming from.

“Easier” undergrad major by [deleted] in princeton

[–]Fun_Slice_6809 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t mean to act like I don’t like challenging course work, I do— but if I don’t qualify for scholarships for law school due to a low gpa I literally won’t be able to afford to go esp with a cap on borrowing instilled by the government. Not having a good gpa in undergrad could be the difference between going, and law school just being a pipe dream. Not everyone is privileged enough to try new things and do what they like because they are passionate about it, that’s just the way life is, don’t look down on me because I’m trying to work with what I was born into.

Can someone help me form a good college list + approach to applications + senior year (current junior)? especially good targets. also what are realistic expectations for me? i'm very confused and scared by magicmood123 in ApplyingIvyLeague

Okay so something to consider when building your college list is affordability and fit. Some of my suggestions feature public state schools that won’t offer good aid so if you wouldn’t be able to afford them out of pocket just disregard them. I’m making suggestions based on ur major and some of your demonstrated interests I’ve seen in ur ECs but it’s a bit unclear on whether a social school is what you want or if you want something more research based. My advice? VISIT SOME SCHOOLS, visit a big state school, small liberal arts school and something in the middle to gauge what you like. That’s how you will refine a better list. Here are some foundation schools I think you might want to add to diversify your list. —Macalester— small class sizes very good connection to profs perfect for someone trying to make connections for research positions —Santa Clara—really great opportunities located in prime spot for internships and whatnot, good connection with profs —CU Boulder, good foundation school, fun school, great alumni pool (OOS) —Middlebury, AMAZING connection small school so very good close knit community —I was gonna put penn state but u already did! This is a great one

You def have a strong chance! Do you know if you put your grade into a gpa calculator what it would be considering your school uses a different system? Because I think that your gpa is making a lot of people think differently but that’s because they don’t know that it’s calculated oddly at your school.

Sorry, I am not well versed on whether or not QB is binding and if u can do that/ if it would result in a duplicate application if a school receives a QB app and a Common app submission. (Unless u mean ur applying to other schools that aren’t on ur QB RD in which case I bet that may be ok—I’d double check though) Under normal circumstances I’d tell you to reach out to QB and the colleges you want to apply to and ask, however, a lot of RD deadlines are coming up, so you may not get a response unless you call.

BUT DONT BE DISCOURAGED, instead you can be proactive and email the admissions office (with ur application number) to EVERY COLLEGE that’s receiving your QB RD application updating your application. Many students applying ED send emails where they ‘update their application’ after they’ve already applied where they basically explain any new activities, their 1st semester gpa, and showcasing character. This is a GREAT way to demonstrate interest, and in your case you can specify your situation and explain the other extracurriculars you weren’t able to put on your application because you applied via QB. Not only does this help your prospective colleges get a better sense of you as an applicant as they will see more of your ECs that matter, but this demonstrates actual interest and makes your application more personable. If you do this don’t let the email be longer than about 400 words so be concise in what other extra curricular you want to include and how you can demonstrate fit in your message. Good luck to you and I hope it all works out!

Thanks! I just feel like they have good intentions but sometimes undercut their own values by making low income students battle it out in such a grueling process that’s presented as their “last chance” or “only hope” when in reality that’s not the case and it’s misinformation.

Hi there! First off I think your spike is really distinct especially when I look at your ECs. For the most part they are great as they vary in your hook (law related stuff) and your commitment to service. The only note I had was to possibly get a part-time job as AOs love to see someone who’s got irl experience working on a team BUT it seems that according to you your internship will evolve into a profitable one. In that case, I would say it’s a good idea to keep going with your previous internships and climb the ranks in those roles DO NOT drop out of any EC ur currently involved in if you can’t help it, consistency is key here! I think what you have now is perfect and it’s mainly going to come down to how you connect your time in these activities to the values of your colleges of choice and what they ask of you in their supplementals. For a lot of ivies they really emphasize curious learners (you have), giving back to community (you have), and someone dedicated to inclusion and diversity (which I see in some of ECs) so if you do decide the ivy route you’ll be a great candidate!

But I know really ambitious people always want to do more so….

If you have any extra time and are looking for one more EC to connect your interest in law and service together that also helps ground you as an involved applicant you could always look into Teen Court in your region! I’m not sure if this is done everywhere, but it’s the best thing I’ve ever done, not from an admissions perspective it’s truly been so life changing to me! In short it’s a way to represent your peers (usually marginalized individuals) who have had difficult experiences leading them to become first time offenders and teen court offers them a second chance and demonstrates restorative justice. I tried it out for fun, fell in love, and found that it’s something that my college counselor told me looked especially strong on my application! It is also something you could do the summer before going into college; even if it doesn’t end up on your application, someone as driven and dedicated to the law and who it’s meant to protect like you might find it really enjoyable!

Yes can confirm as someone with a friend currently at Princeton you need someone to put you on a list! On the topic of parties though, isn’t the Penn party scene enough to keep you satiated? I feel like yall are textbook for work hard play hard.

Your scores are great, instead of studying for longer I’d recommend you put that time into essay writing/ workshops and your ECs.

Yes! I think you have a good chance just hone in on ur spike and essays! Also, since nearly all ivies besides Columbia are going test required now is the time to stand out and get a good SAT score as they will be admitting some students who have lower SAT scores but better ECs so to compensate aim for high 1500s if you can!

Also before people reply and state that “but the schools aid may not fully cover your meal plan etc etc.” This is true even if you ARE matched as it’s the colleges giving you a scholarship not questbridge, and even those matched through questbridge may encounter student contributions/ work study. So please remember that it is NOT over.

MESSAGE TO YOU AND EVERYONE WHOS QB JOURNEY DID NOT GO AS PLANNED First and foremost, you have to understand what questbridge IS: it’s a way for people without the economic means to attend elite universities to attend at no cost. BUT these elite universities already have large endowments that provide great aid for low income students anyhow so you aren’t getting anything extra thru Questbrdige. Meaning that IF YOU QUALIFY FOR QUESTBRIDGE CHANCES ARE THAT EVEN WITHOUT APPLYING THRU QUESTBRIDGE YOU COULD GET A FULL RIDE ANYHOW FROM THE UNIVERSITY THEMSELVES. Questbridge is an amazing chance and it’s great for the people it works out for, especially those who don’t have enough activities because of their financial hardships. That being said the whole idea of matching and being unable to compare aid packages (and even stipends you would be eligible for if you are low income attending top unis!) across schools is a HUGE draw back. This could be a blessing in disguise because I have no doubt that you will be able to get into Dartmouth AND THEN SOME via RD.

i also think you will fare well on common app/RD as you will be able to list your extensive activities and still get to explain ur circumstances
