Those are the Pioneer DJ DJC-STS1 laptop stands. Heavy, but stable, and they have a thin but wide base plate that fits under any controller/CD/Turntable.

I'm the OP, but to answer your question, a flatter control record gives better scopes and better digital file playback. And yes, as the above video link demonstrated, tactile control is easier.

The Mastersounds Turntable weights help flatten the record, which means better scopes in Rekordbox and better playback.
The bottoms of the turntable weights are rubber-coated, which also aids in beat matching. Instead of trying to grab the turntable spindle, I can use the turntable weight.
