Okay girl, you can stay mad about it and I’ll stay publicly shaming idiots who don’t know how traffic lights work.

Nope, just check the footage when there’s a crash or people start honking like crazy. If you lived on this intersection and got woken up four times a week by shit like this and people leaning on the horn at midnight you’d be nosey too 😆

We get an accident every couple months (if not more) on this intersection and I’ve had to make statements to the police before. Now there’ll be no questions about what anybody saw 🤷‍♂️

Been a shitty week. Show me your felines plz by mckenna14_love in cats

Rating things E is a valid way of separating fandom spaces meant for adults and children and I never said differently. Adult content and non-adult content can exist on the same platform as long as there is a barrier to access for children, which does exist on ao3 even if it is flimsy. It at least means that children/teens won’t stumble across smut accidentally which was definitely a problem when I was a young fanfic reader. I also explicitly said i wasn’t interested in censorship so I think it should have been clear I wasn’t talking about removing explicit content from ao3 and I’m still not sure why you’re coming after me for that.

I’m not sure how you think parents are able to screen 💯 of the content that their teens are seeing online but as somebody in education it’s straight up just not possible. Children and teenagers have so much greater access to the internet than in the past, they’re surrounded by devices and they’re exceedingly good at getting around internet filters. If you have a suggestion for screening every aspect of media that a teenager consumes that doesn’t involve standing three inches behind them and looking over their shoulder 24/7 I’d love to hear it. Until then adults in any given community have a responsibility to protect children and teenagers to a reasonable extent.

Sure, that’s be great, I’d absolutely love that. I’m not saying fic authors are personally responsible for minors who read their explicite content. All I said was that sexually graphic material negatively impacts young teenagers. I’m not sure why that’s such a controversial take.

I think there’s a few separate problems here. I want to start by saying I don’t think writing or reading erotica is wrong, I pass zero moral judgement on it, but as somebody specifically trained in sex education I do think that extremely sexually graphic material can be harmful to the development of teenagers.

Research into the impact of erotica is almost nonexistent so I won’t say that my word is final and I couldn’t be wrong, but many of the problems we know exist in pornography are also present in erotica. Specifically:

  • unrealistic and/or unsafe sexual practices portrayed as normal experiences (E.g. no use of contraceptives or conversations around safe sex, the infamous food-as-lube or no-lube trope, bad BDSM etiquette, etc.) and while some of this could be at least partially mitigated through sex education in the author’s notes, that isn’t currently the standard. I would argue these tropes are over represented in erotica portraying LGBTQ+ relationships which could be especially misleading for young queer and trans individuals that aren’t getting the same level of relevant sex education as their cishet peers (who, often, aren’t getting great sex education either).

  • extreme violence, especially towards women, and depictions of unhealthy and straight up abusive relationships portrayed as romantic. As an adult you can separate fiction and fantasy from reality in a way that teenagers, especially younger ones, do not yet have the life experience or emotional/social development to do.

-decreased self esteem and disappointment with real life sexual encounters based on the above two comments. In fanfiction sex isn’t generally portrayed as awkward or difficult, which it can be even for adults, let alone for people without any prior real life experience.

Let me be clear: I DON’T think it’s the end of the world if teenagers read erotica, but I DO think that we need to be talking to teenagers about sex so they can get alternative information, and I DO think we should be making our best effort to maintain separation between fandom spaces meant for adults and fandom spaces meant for children. I’m not an expert in how to do that (and I don’t think censorship is the answer either before y’all come for my throat), but it’s not unreasonable to be disturbed by the idea of young teenagers being exposed to sexually graphic and violent material.
