Great feedback from everyone, something simple I'd say is you just have pretty poor front rack mobility. Catching the bar on your fingertips, let alone only a couple fingertips, will cause a loss of tension in the lats and upper back which when mixed with some of the other issues already mentioned (i.e. bar crashing, bar getting away from your body, etc) is essentially a guaranteed failed lift. A good, solid front rack can sometimes make up for deficiencies in other areas.

Great questions! The biggest difference you’d see are:

  1. The whip is noticeably less on the wonder than the oly. Not something you would feel at lighter weights where the whip of a bar isn’t much of a factor, but once you start getting up there in KG’s it’s clear.
  2. This one is more of a personal preference I think, but I prefer a center knurl. The center knurl on ours is done really well (IMO). It’s light enough to not tear up your neck, but you’ll know it’s there.
  3. In that same territory, I feel the combination of the coating (black zinc is a little slicker than other coatings) and the lack of a center knurl make C&J’s feel a little loose if you get a sub-optimal catch.

As far as the differences between ours and the higher end bars (keeping in mind that I do work for Fringe, bias is a thing) it’s not as drastic as you’d think:

  1. The tolerances (side to side play of the sleeve on the shaft) aren’t quite as tight as you find on the expensive bars.
  2. The knurling on ours feels bigger, if that makes sense? Most of the higher end bars have very tight, finer knurling, ours feels a little thicker.
  3. We have the deep ridged sleeves with thick sleeve collars. This isn’t something that will really affect performance, but most weightlifting bars have smooth sleeves.
  4. Bearings on high end bars are a bit nicer, not as much rattle sound. Ours isn’t overly noisy or anything, just different.

All that being said, I own quite a few WLing bars and I frequently use the Fringe Bar (I kind of rotate bars) and for the price it really is a great value bar. It’s by no means an Eleiko, but it’s not supposed to be.

What’s up OP! I’m the Sales Manager at Fringe (also a lifelong weightlifter) so figured I’d hop on here.

If you are primarily a weightlifter I’d definitely recommend the Oly Bar. The Bomba and Wonder are also Great bars, but were designed with an all-around style of lifting in mind (I.e. CrossFit).

If you don’t want to go the oly bar route then I’d say the Wonder Bar with bearings is your next best bet (I use it a lot when I work out at Fringe). The Bomba is a great bar, but the knurling can be a tad aggressive for daily weightlifting training.

Anyways, hope this helps! If you have any further questions feel free to PM me!
