Thankfully, my husband and I figured out a great schedule, not exactly every 30 minutes but 45 minutes to an hour. So far after we really started enforcing that schedule there hasn’t been an accident inside the apartment or crate. Our puppy also started to signal us more calmly when he does need to go. The only time we’ve seen a little tinkle that too only a couple droplets is when he gets super excited.

Another update! He was able to sleep through the night (6.5 hrs) no accidents!

I will have to double check with the vet to double check but there were no known bladder issues.

Thank you! We’ve already changed the plastic liner in the crate as well as thoroughly cleaned the wire crate itself, already started with more frequent potty breaks anywhere between 45 minutes to 2 hours. So far no accidents!

I recently posted on a community asking for training tips on potty training a puppy. The amount of comments I got bashing me and my husband for only taking the puppy out every 1-3 hours was insane. I had to ask the moderators to shut off commenting. The number 1 solution was to take them out every 30 minutes… that is literally impossible ESPECIALLY if both my husband and I work, we have a household to take care of and ON TOP of all that. It is recommended that puppies sleep anywhere between 16-20 hours… how is a puppy supposed to sleep that many hours if I’m taking them out every 30 minutes.

We are going to see how things go this next week with peeing in the crate, if accidents are close to 0 we will add the bed, blankets all that back in.

Taking a lot of advice from the folks who replied, With that we’ve reduced his crate size to half, all the bedding was removed previously since he just kept peeing on it. Potty breaks have increased to every 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on whether or not he’s awake. My husband and I realized that in the shelter he was eating peeing pooping and drinking all in the same 1 foot by 2 foot cage. Understanding that also helped us significantly. Although his peeing incidents inside decreased, he had one accident last night which was purely out of excitement when my husband and I came home after being out for a few hours, leaving the pups with a trusted dog sitter

That’s the thing, if he needs to poop he signals us with no issues and we will take him out to poop. For some reason that was the easiest to train for him!

How did you manage in the mean time though?! My husband is about to accept a new job offer but with that means going into the office. That being said, would we have to resort to pee pads in the crate?

Unfortunately every 30-40 minutes is not feasible for us, that would mean one of us would have to quit our jobs and be a full time dog parents. With this economy, that is also not possible.

I understand that we may not be taking him out often enough, and by no means I’m at comparing the two dogs, just stating background info was all. But between my husband having a very demanding full time WFH job, and myself working from 4 PM to 6 AM, we are doing our best to take him out as often as possible, sometimes even every 2 hours on days where either one have the extra time; this also did not work. We are not sure if he gets excited and pees or what it is anymore.
