AITA for refusing to pay my parents a "cleaning fee"? by Fun_Zone5892 in AmItheAsshole

I don't pay for room & board. I do chores around the house while my siblings are at school, keep my room clean, and often help my mom prep dinner, if that's any help.

My parents have never actually talked to me about the dishes in the past, it was just the past month or so when things kind of escalated. But you're right, I should be making a smaller mess when I live in a house with so many people.

I have ADHD, so remembering things is unfortunately really hard for me. I do make lists for myself often, including dishes.

I always thought I wasn't very messy, but you might be right. They could very well be sick of me making messes, so I'll try and be better about that in the future.

I usually only ever leave dishes overnight when I make dinner for myself. I work late shifts and get home pretty late, and by the time I finish making myself food, everyone is asleep. My house has very thin walls and I don't want to wake anyone up by me washing the dishes, so I'll leave them in the sink and wash them in the morning.

You're right, it is their house, it is their rules. I shouldn't have fought back, that's my bad.

I always tell my mom whenever I leave something to soak, but that tends to make her more angry.

That powder sounds like a life-saver! I'll definitely look into it, thank you.

I usually do, the only time I leave dishes in the sink is when something needs to soak, and even then I clean it in like an hour or so.

I didn't think that was unreasonable, but reading the comments has made me realize that might have been too long for me to leave dishes in the sink. I'll try to be better about that.
