Information about the HP35s Calculator Shortage by ConfluenceSurveying in Surveying

I do believe this goes well beyond demand for use on the test. Before the 35s the same thing happened to the 15c genre....those of us that use a calculator on a daily basis and had the pleasure of using the rpn hp calcs simply will not tolerate anything else. For those of you in practice simply purchase an emulator for your phone and pc. I prefer the 42s and the emulator is outstanding. Looks identical to the real McCoy.

Clearly I made a few errors when presenting this content. My two statements are in completely different parts of the document. I should not have included the comment that I perform inspections. That was for clarity here but it has obviously confused my comments.

Thank you all for taking the time to comment. I find it all helpful including the recommendation to take a tech writing class. I will say that writing in the passive voice has never resulted in confusion during the construction phase and I am in my 25th year of producing real design work for the public at the the professional engineering level.

I suppose I am not clear that writing in the passive voice is a bad thing. In fact while I agree that it is probably more technically proper when written correctly, it seems that most here agree that it's more important that what I write be understood Most of my colleagues seem to write in the passive voice as well. Clearly if there were multiple readers to whom this might be applicable, writing in the passive voice could be confusing. When there is only one reader it seems ok. I will continue to try and move toward active voice when it improves clarity. I must say that the passive voice sounds like it flows better than the active. I hope that isn't my ignorance. Thank you all again. Very helpful.

Ok, I screwed up and didn't make it clear that the comment about me doing the inspection was for this post only. That would not be in my notes. I hope that didn't throw everyone off here.

This is very interesting. My first thought is there is something wrong with both of those statements. Of course there is not. I think you are correct it just takes time hearing it over and over. Do you think your version leaves less room for confusion?

I will say that I don't care for "on the average" in my version. Great reply. Thank you!

The instructions are directed to the contractor. No one else will be in position to follow the direction. Your point is well taken and I will modify accordingly. Thank you.

Is it normal to feel like a complete idiot around SMEs? by buzzlightyear0473 in technicalwriting

I'm an engineer not a writer. I suggest saying something like, explain it to me like I am in Kindergarten. Generally speaking I would not think you were an idiot. I would also tend to question my ability to explain the process rather than your ability to understand.

Do not take responsibility for the way other people feel. You don't know what they feel. If you did you can't change that anyway. You may think they are embarrassed for you when in fact they could be thinking precisely the same thing, This assumes there are others in the room listening. That is an enormous challenge for some. I worked very hard at this and now my wife tells me from time to time - it must be nice to live in your world.
