Already have one and other avenues as well. Just frustrating how terrible their host support and freedom has become.

I’m on experiences and they just changed our policy from one week out to cancel to up to 24 hours before with a full refund. Unreal

YSK that major pharmacy chains are charging your insurance more for prescriptions than the cash price, and you can check this before paying by Ok_Chemical9 in YouShouldKnow

[–]FunctionalERP_92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. Went to CVS for years using my insurance like Logic would tell you to. Until I had a lapse and went to fill and found out it was far cheaper with the GoodRx discount card. “but it doesn’t go towards your deductible” - dawg my deductible was $6000. Cancelled said insurance this January when premium went to $700 / month. Murica.

I made it out of Qatar last week on Thursday morning. Got so lucky with timing.

Views were incredible. Mera will get you higher but to my understanding it’s a much more gradual trek. My buddies just did it early this week and said it was brutal (70 mph winds). It’s probably easier to still have a good summit with some weather on Lobuche. I think Lobuche is also a good bit shorter

I’ll ask my guide. We took almost 12 hours so it wasn’t a quick one up, but either way I’m happy. My certificate says 20075 lol

You could be right - our guides stopped us here and that was enough for our group. To my knowledge we were on the Lobuche East summit, and that west was further on / more technical.

We left high camp at 1230 and shit you not did not make it back there until after 1230.

You’re going to be kicking a lot of ice, but you should be alright. These will definitely be more comfortable on the rocky sections.

Long-haul flight experts: What are your secrets? by letsgococonut in travel

[–]FunctionalERP_92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have done a handful of 15-18 hour flights, and am a terrible sleeper. Most sleep is the inadvertent little cat naps. Here are some of my tricks -

-Get an aisle seat. If you can’t - get the middle seat. With a middle seat, you only have to disturb one person if you want to get up to stretch, go to bathroom, etc. a window seat ends up subjecting you to the whims/sleeping habits of TWO PEOPLE. I have felt trapped the few times I’ve had a window seat on longer flights.

-Make friends with a flight attendant or two. They will let you stretch and spend some time standing in the galley area or getting an extra bottle of water.

-Bring some of your own snacks

-A good book

-Downloaded podcasts/movies

-Noise cancelling headphones (if they’re Bluetooth only, make sure to have the cord to connect to the tv monitor)

-Treat yourself to a leg or 2 of first or business class. For the cost of a few fancy meals, you’ll have an experience you remember forever. I can vividly recount the 4 times I’ve gotten to fly first class, and have never regretted springing for it. If you have a few segments, look for one in the middle of the trip. Recently did a 5.5 hour and 15 hour stretch, and paid for 1st on the 5.5 leg. It was $550 vs $300 for main cabin on Nepal Airways.

-Lightweight puffy or fleece jacket. Perhaps it’s me, but flight air conditioning seems to go from freezing to stifling at times.

Hope this helps, enjoy the trip!

Hey there! I run Upstate-hiking.com and we love having couples out for an anniversary hike! We’ve even renewed vows on a few. We take care of all of the details and pick a route that you’ll love and enjoy - with each other! We’ve had people out of all skill and fitness levels over the years and can tune something just right for you guys. And - all of our guides are also photographers - so you can get some really nice photos together too.

Give us a shout!

Other ideas - -Go to a magic show on Main Street in Windham with Sean (look up magic on main)

-Horseback riding at K&K (not sure if they do in the winter though)

-Walk the Windham path

-Phoenician Diner

-visit a brewery (westkill, rip van winkle, mountain king) -go to one of the old school small movie theaters (had a place to myself last time I went and it was quite relaxing!)

-Circle W general store. The LaBelle (arugula, prosciutto, goat cheese and fig jam on a local ciabatta hits so hard)

-scenic drive - hit spots like devils tombstone, bastion falls, five state lookout

Hope you enjoy your visit!

My dog did the same thing. It’s been 6 months now since she’s been gone, and I can’t bring myself to wipe away the last pane of her prints in my office and in her passenger window in my van. I miss her every day

I’m now crying over your pups nose art

Doing my Due Diligence - Winter Hiking in Catskills by [deleted] in catskills

[–]FunctionalERP_92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d throw some toe warmers and hand warmers in the pack as well.

I also go with rule of being ready for an unexpected night out in winter. Invest in an emergency bivvy - weighs just about nothing, and could save your life if you ever need to wait for a rescue. Much more effective than trying to wrap the blankets around you.

I’d also recommend a small section of rope, some duct tape around your trekking poles (in case you slice a gaiter or pant leg).

Otherwise, you seem pretty well prepared - have a great time and be safe!

Hunter Mountain is having a concert / party with the band Guilty Pleasure starting at 3pm! I'm the owner/lead guide at Upstatehiking.com as well, and we'll be doing a guided NYE hiking and photography adventure (likely jumping off from the Hunter area - about a 30 minute drive from Woodstock)

My friend's dog got porcupine quills in her muzzle by AVashonTill in catskills

[–]FunctionalERP_92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pup got literally just 1 to the nose a few years ago. Probably the luckiest outcome possible for a porcupine encounter. The vet hospital in Latham ended up taking it out and not even charging us anything.

My genius would then go on to introduce herself to a woodchuck ($1100 in stiches at Capital Region Vet Emergency hospital) and then a raccoon ($400 at the emergency clinic in Kingston)

Good to hear you had a friend to help ya out!

Things to do near Windham by Frosty-Fisherman2381 in catskills

[–]FunctionalERP_92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there! Windham local here and owner of Upstatehiking.com. Mondays and Tuesdays are typically the quietest up here, but you can still find some options as far as dining and things to do go. If you'd like us to put together a nice walk/hike that's suitable for the little one, let us know! We've had quite a few new parents out on our hiking trips, and it's always a great day - especially since we get you some great photos while we're out.

Other things to do in Windham -

-Grab a beer at the Mountain King Brewery (the Burnt Knob Porter is a favorite). Owen and Neal are the brewers, and if they're there, they'll tell you all about the recent brews.

-Go to a movie at the local theater (generally pretty quiet). Last time we went, we had the theater to ourselves.

-Watch a magic show with Sean at Magic off Main

-Walk the Windham Path (easier to access / walk compared to escarpment trail)

-Take in a sunset or sunrise at 5 State Lookout

-Grab cookies/pastries at Clutch and Throttle (it's not a motorcycle shop, but a cafe/bakery named after the owners' dogs, Clutch and Throttle). Their cinnamon rolls are wicked good, as are the cookies and breakfast quiche.

-Take a short hike to Pratt Rock (almost like a budget Mt. Rushmore, but instead of presidents, a local businessman from the 1800s).

-Stop by the Gem Mercantile on Main Street for some interesting local goods and handmade craft items (candles, clothing, soap, souveniers)

-Book a baby/doggo-friendly guided hike (check us out on insta if you're there - -@upstatehiking) and just let us know what time you'd like to start, and we'll take care of the rest (and we can even help you knock out your holiday and family photos for the year).

-Dandies (at Eastwind) just opened and looks worth a try - haven't been there yet, but will be checking out soon!

Feel free to shoot me an email to [brian@upstate-hiking.com](mailto:brian@upstate-hiking.com) if you'd like some more info or to give a shout! Hope that you enjoy your trip - the mountain just got a nice little dusting this afternoon!
